Some are dirty, some are clean; and they are absolutely everywhere. I was drying my bottles on the Dr. Brown's Drying Rack, but it simply was not designed for the Wide Neck Bottles, and was not efficient. Our friends Dan and Meaghan came to visit us from New York and "make our lives easier" with the baby, and they really, really did. From holding the baby nonstop so that I could finally get things done, to cooking for us, feeding the baby, changing diapers; they really made my life so much easier for almost a week, and I was lost when they left. But one thing they did before leaving was set me up with a better bottle storage and drying solution.

Dan saw my frustration with the mess of bottles that had taken over my kitchen and my life. He did a simple Google search and found a much better solution for me. It's amazing how a lack of sleep can completely destroy your logical functioning. Google better solutions?! What does that even mean!? Then they went the extra mile and purchased the setup for us as one of many baby gifts they left for Troy (and realistically, me).

I had the ClosetMaid Over the Sink Drainer ($8.80) before they arrived, and used it in the sink to dry dishes. One of them moved it out of the sink and onto a towel when they washed our overflowing sink of dirty dishes. It has stayed out of the sink since.

At the top of the stack here, you see the Boon Grass Countertop Drying Rack in Green ($14.99). This is not to be confused with the larger version, the Boon Lawn. I went with the smaller grass because it was going on top of the drawers, and my mommy brain legitimately couldn't work out comparing the measurements of the two items, and smaller seemed safer to fit. It has worked out just fine, but if you want the larger version and it fits where you want it, by all means, upgrade. If I could do it again, I would have literally written down the measurements and stared them down until it made sense, because more room is usually better. However, this is not to say I'm unhappy with what I have. Bigger just means I can go longer in between washing dishes.

The drawers are the Sterilite ClearView 3 Storage Drawer Organizer ($24.99). They have been perfect for storing the various components to my Dr. Brown bottles. Important notes about storing those parts:
- the Wide Neck nipples and collars can fit deconstructed, but the classic or "skinny" collars and nipples fit full assembled with the cap on.
-the Wide Neck vent components do not fit if assembled; the vent components for the "skinny" bottles do fit assembled.
-the Wide Neck bottles do not fit in the drawers; the "skinny" bottles actually do.
-drawer liners keep the various components from sliding around all over the place, which gets old very quickly.
-the flanges for my Medela Pump In Style fit in the drawers with no room to spare (can't overlap rims, etc).
-the single piece that makes up the connector and flange for the Ameda does not fit in the drawer no matter how I turn it.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-44805212598364664822017-06-08T23:06:00.001-07:002017-06-08T23:08:45.370-07:00how i increased and maintain my supply exclusively pumpingSo now that you know how it all began, here we are. I am exclusively pumping, and according to the Glow Baby App, I'm pumping anywhere from 900-1300 ml per day (30-43.3 oz). In the beginning, I was getting 250-350ml each day. Keep in mind, your supply naturally increases as baby's demand increases, so that has to account for some of my supply increase. Like I previously stated, the steps I took were from research across many sites on the internet, and the information I have is also from research. So here's what I did, and what I learned!

Pump, and pump often. In the beginning, I was pumping as often as I was feeding the baby, and I was feeding on demand. He was a little babe at that point, so it was usually every two hours. If the little babe allowed, I was pumping for twenty minutes as well. Did I always get to pump every two hours? No, no I did not. But when you're trying to increase your supply, pump as often as you can, and if it takes twenty minutes to allow for multiple let downs and completely drain your breast, that's what you have to do. Now that my supply is large, and I'm trying to pump less often, I've been pumping for at least thirty minutes while massaging my breast. Sometimes it can take a little longer. One trick is to pump longer than your actual expression; this sends a signal to the breast that you are not producing enough milk to keep up with demand and helps increase supply.

How did this help my supply? Well my lactation consult and I found that my babe was an inefficient nurser, so even after nursing for 20-30 minutes, he was only eating about an ounce. If I had not started pumping, I would have had even more issues with keeping up with his demands. Pumping helped increase demand. In the beginning, I was supplementing my breast milk with formula; I haven't had to do that for weeks, and I have a stockpile of over 300 ounces.

Drink lots and lots and lots of water. In the beginning, my boyfriend would make sure I always had a full bottle of water next to me. After he went back to work, it became my responsibility, and on the days I slack off on drinking water, my supply suffers. I've gotten into the habit of drinking at least twelve ounces of water each time I pump. Now that I'm pumping less but still feeding at least five times a day, I try to drink that much each time I feed him.

Keep taking your prenatal vitamins. There are also post-partum and breastfeeding vitamins on the market as well. Take a vitamin! You are making your baby's food, and that is a high demand on your body. Make sure you're getting what you both need. I don't know if this effects your supply, but it's hard to be an efficient milk machine if you're run down.

Drink smoothies! You can add the smoothie ingredients to other meals, but making smoothies is fast and easy and sometimes you don't have time to do anything other than throw some shit in a blender and turn it on. Bonus points if you have a separate room away from where the baby is sleeping to run your blender. I usually only drink one smoothie a day, but if I have more than one, the only ingredients I never double are the fenugreek and lecithin. Everything else is on a "what's my mood" basis if I have a second smoothie.

I bought everything I needed for my smoothies between Amazon Prime and Prime Now. Though I do work for Amazon, I don't benefit from sharing the links that way. I do use Amazon Affiliates, but I mostly use it for the shortened links.

Black + Decker Fusion Blade Personal Blender ($20-$30) - This has two cups and is super easy to clean. It handles frozen banana chunks and whole frozen strawberries just fine. I add whole oatmeal as well, and why it's not smooth (because oatmeal), but it's totally drinkable and it is a pretty powerful little machine.

Spectrum Ground Flaxseed, 24 ounces ($7.95) - I use a tablespoon of this per smoothie, if I include it in my smoothie. There is no reason to not include it in every smoothie I make, but I don't always include it. Store this in the freezer to keep it fresh as long as possible; omegas are susceptible to damage from temperature fluctuations.

Spectrum Ground Chia Seed, 10 ounces ($7.84) - I don't always use Chia Seed either, but when I do, it's a tablespoon as well. I store this in my freezer as well to keep it as fresh as possible.

Starwest Botanicals Organic Fenugreek Seed Powder, 1 Pound ($12.76) - this stuff is the magic. Fenugreek is well known for it's ability to increase your milk supply. It is one of the main ingredients of all of the "mother's milk tea"s on the market. I can see an increase in supply within hours. I only use 1/8 of a teaspoon per smoothie, or 1/4 of teaspoon, but only every other day. I have to be careful with fenugreek or I will have issues with engorgement. I've also read that it can give the baby diarrhea, so I am careful to not overuse it. My bub has enough tummy issues.

Lecithin Granules NON-GMO Now Foods 1 lbs Granule ($13.87) - this does not increase supply, but it is vital to your supply. Lecithin is a fat emulsifier, so it helps prevent clogged ducts. I was having issues with recurrent clogged ducts in my right breast, so I started including this. I haven't had clogged ducts since. My supply suffered from the clogged ducts, and my right breast is my slacker now (usually only producing about 65% of what my left breast produces). This is a non-gmo soy lecithin, but you can also get sunflower sourced lecithin if you have a soy allergy. I use one serving in my smoothie, which is listed as 1.5 tablespoons.

I will get some photos and expand on this a little more later, but I wanted to get this information up immediately for those of you who have messaged me. Consider this a work in progress! When I update it again, it will include information about why I use these items specifically, and also resources for information.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-46949568891763621812017-06-08T23:06:00.000-07:002017-06-08T23:06:59.859-07:00In the beginning... [my breastfeeding to exclusively pumping journey]I have received two DMs in the past hour on Instagram asking how I boosted my milk supply; so here I am. First let me start by saying I am not a lactation consultant, or any sort of healthcare professional; and a good lactation consultant is a priceless tool in your breastfeeding journey. Always start with trying to find one; they can help address latch issues and also make sure your baby is efficiently nursing.

Also, everything I know about breastfeeding and milk supply I have learned by doing research during my own struggles with feeding my little nugget. No formal training, no degrees or higher education; please do not take my word as gospel. What I can share is my own personal anecdote, and hopefully it can help you find a direction in your own journey.

In the beginning...

I was able to express colostrum starting in my second trimester. It was never a ton, but it was there and I could express it any time I tried (though I didn't do it often once I read that nipple stimulation can cause preterm labor). I share this information because this could mean that I was going to have a great supply from the beginning.

My son was born at exactly 37 weeks via emergency c-section. He was a healthy 7 lbs 1 oz, though we found that the better part of at least a pound of that was actually fluid from my long 36 hour labor. He was down to 6 pounds 4 ounces when we had our first post partum visit five days after delivery; that is an 11% body weight loss.

My experience with the lactation consultants at the hospital was not a positive one. I was having my own struggles due to a long, taxing labor, a drug reaction, and having a team of consultants confusing me with conflicting information. I started breastfeeding in recovery right after my c-section, and continued to breastfeed my entire stay (I had him on a Sunday at noon, I left the hospital by Tuesday afternoon). By the time we were released, the one consultant who did not frustrate the absolute hell out of me requested I supplement, and I obliged out of desperation to just do something right for him.

When I had my followup appointment to have my staples removed and check on the bub, the consultant made me feel like I had been starving my baby to death, that we were moments from a NICU stay, and that I was a horrible person and mother. I literally wanted to have a meltdown at that point and stop breastfeeding because I thought I was killing him. He had jaundice, and we had to start getting his bilirubin levels checked almost every other day. Fortunately, my pediatrician was in charge of this, and preferred that we "feed him and get him in the sun" versus a hospital stay. His bilirubin levels were elevated, but they were also stable, and the doctor was confident that I was able to fix this.

The IBCLC at my pediatrician was extremely frustrated with how my previous experiences had gone, how it had all been handled, saying in an almost angry voice, "Why is there no record of how much he weighed when he was discharged? Them telling me how much he weighed at birth does me no good! He's going to lose weight, of course!" Both she and my pediatrician reassured me that I was doing a great job, that my baby was fine, and we just needed to formulate a plan to get some weight on him. I felt much more confident, and was able to get weight on him very quickly with their help.

My milk came in when I was already home, somewhere between seven and ten days after delivery. I did not pump at that time because of the conflicting information I was finding about how to handle engorgement when your milk comes in. If I could do this over, I would have started pumping on day one, or even before my milk came in. I was nursing, and I was terrified that if I pumped, I would take away from the little supply my babe was getting, so I was afraid of interfering. By the end of the first week of him nursing nonstop, destroying my nipples, and him still not gaining any weight, a hard decision was made. As I sobbed into his little head during a painful latch onto my deeply cracked nipple, I knew I couldn't do this anymore. I had a meltdown to my best friend about what was happening, and she reassured me that whatever I decided to do, I was not a bad mother. We discussed my options, and she helped me pull my shit together enough to make a logical, thought out decision on how to proceed on our journey. I decided at that time I would start pumping exclusively to give my nipple time to heal, and then I would attempt to nurse again at a future date. If she and I had not have had that conversation, I would not still be breastfeeding. I would have given up in my mental state. I text my IBCLC the next day to tell her my plan, and she supported my choice. Also, yes; I can text my IBCLC any time I need to - she spoils us.

Due to both the damage to my right nipple, and the fact that I sleep on that side, I have had re-occuring plugged ducts that have decreased my supply in my right breast significantly. Though I have been able to consistently increase my supply overall, my right breast is my "slacker", and my left is my "boss boob". Have fun with breastfeeding ladies; the less it feels like a chore (and it can certainly feel that way), the easier it will be.

So now that we know how it began.. let's talk about how I've increased my supply. Since this has gotten much longer than I intended, let's make it a separate post.. shall we?m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-52140887721946686802017-06-05T07:33:00.002-07:002017-06-05T20:06:13.658-07:00Mommy Must Haves - BreastfeedingI breastfed the first few weeks of my son's life. I wanted to continue to breastfeed into his toddler age, but unfortunately, my late preterm baby had latching issues, and as I sobbed into his head because I couldn't take the pain anymore, I decided it was necessary to switch to exclusively pumping. Yes, we saw lactation consultants. Yes, we tried a lot of troubleshooting. Yes, I still occasionally try to get him to latch and see how it goes. Sadly, I don't think breastfeeding is for my baby if I want him to thrive at this time.

Is breastfeeding hard? Sometimes. Some women (and their babies) have zero issues with breastfeeding. For the rest of us, it will be hard, and I want to acknowledge that because before I had my baby, everyone made breastfeeding seem like it was easy; that they had chose breastfeeding because it was the easiest option. For some, it is. I did not have that luxury; breastfeeding was a nonstop battle. But even losing that battle, I chose to pump because I do feel that breast milk is best. If you can't produce milk, by all means use formula. But it is my choice (which is based on my opinion, which is formed via research) that if breast milk is an option, then it's the only option.

Despite the battles that can come with breastfeeding, there are many items that I think make breastfeeding easier. Do you need these items to breast feed? No. You need a baby and your milk to breast feed. Everything else is extra.

Photos coming soon.

1. My Brest Friend Pillow ($20-$60; varies by cover and type)

I am such a fan of this product that I included it in my Newborn Must Haves list. The Brest Friend pillow is secured to the body at the waist with an adjustable strap. You can get the width exact with velcro, but attach it silently with a clip. There are several options to suit any specific needs of the mother or baby; waterproof covers, organic covers, an inflatable version for travel, and a double version specifically for moms who are nursing twins. This pillow was invented by a man who wanted to create a solution for his breastfeeding friends. He gathered their complaints about the nursing pillows that were available at the time, and addressed those issues. Everything that was wrong with other pillows I tried was definitely missing from this option, and I'm so glad I bought this pillow, even if I gave up on nursing shortly after. I still let my baby nurse from time to time, but his latch just isn't good enough to effectively nurse. When we do nurse, we have this pillow, and I will be happy to pass it on to a friend when we don't need it anymore.

2. Medela Pump In Style Advanced ($139 for the starter kit; $299.99-$359.99)

If you are breastfeeding, you need some sort of pump. Even if you don't need to pump in a workplace, there will still be times that you will need a pump. You can use a pump to help increase your supply, to help remedy plugged ducts, to help with nipple and latching issues, to pump off any extra milk to store, and even create a small stash for emergency reasons or so that your partner can help with bottle feeding so that you can get some much deserved sleep! That said, if you won't need to pump often, there are certainly cheaper options on the market, both from Medela, as well as several other brands. From my research during pregnancy, I decided the Medela PISA was the pump I wanted. I also purchased a secondary "backup" pump. I have an unopened Ameda Purely Yours Carryall that I found on clearance. As an exclusive pumper, I get a lot of peace of mind having a backup pump, but most moms won't find it necessary, especially if they are exclusively breastfeeding.

2. Haakaa Silicone Breast Pump ($20 NZD - $36 NSD; about $14 - $26)

This option is becoming more and more popular among breastfeeding moms. You can use this to express milk like any other manual pump would, but it's most popular application is to actually latch it on with light suction while breast feeding from the other breast. The pump then catches any milk that would usually be lost during let down. This can make or break a new breastfeeding mom's spirit if she's struggling to produce milk, but feels like she's wasting so much each time she feeds. It's also an affordable option in comparison to the more expensive electric pumps, and a much easier investment for moms who aren't planning to pump much.

3. Boob-Ease Organic Nipple Balm ($12.99)

During our struggles with breastfeeding, a giant cavern of a crack formed on my nipple. Each time my son latched on, I had to grip the side of the pillow and bite down to keep from crying out and scaring him. I am moderately tattooed and handle pain well, but this was unlike anything I had experienced. This crack in my nipple was eventually the reason I accepted that my son just can't latch and it was time to find a solution other than suffering through it. Both nipples were wrecked, but I was legitimately concerned that my right nipple needed stitches. I started using Boob Ease under the recommendation of a friend because the nipple cream I was using was coconut based and stayed hard in my 74 degree apartment, making it extremely difficult to work with; something I had no patience for. The Boob Ease made a difference right away, and helped heal my nipple. I would also slather it on before pumping as a lubricant to prevent as much rubbing on my poor nipples as possible. The company that makes Boob Ease does also make a pumping lubricant, but this worked just fine for me.

4. Lansinoh Thera Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy ($13.99)

I put these on my registry early on because they seemed like a good idea. My childhood friend Lacey got them for me because she is brilliant and also a nurse. She could see the logic and practicality behind them, and I'm so happy that she did. I used them cold once during my engorgement period when my milk came in, but I also have used them hot several times to help unplug ducts while pumping. The fact that they're designed to be worn both on the breast directly, and also over a flange, makes them a must have for breast feeding (and pumping, for that matter).

5. Wee Essentials Nursing Pads ($3.50 - $3.75)

I was already using Wee Essentials reusable menstrual pads before I got pregnant. Then when my best (and breast) friend got pregnant with her little one, I ordered her a mommy set of nursing pads, reusable menstrual pads, and a babymoon shell for the heavy bleeding phase after delivery. When I found out we were expecting our own baby, I immediately put in an order for my own set of nursing pads and babymoon shell. She makes them in a variety of sizes and prints (which vary by material). You can buy ready to ship, pre-made ones in her shop, or you can place a custom order. I have done both. The owner of the shop is an amazing human being who is a mother herself. She has always answered all of my endless questions with patience and grace, and I am so thankful to her for that because I'm sure some of my questions were a little dumb. I truly can't recommend her enough.

6. Nursing Bra

There is no one nursing bra that I personally recommend. I do recommend finding something wire free, as the wires can contribute to plugged ducts and breast soreness, which can lead to mastitis. When shopping for a nursing bra, you want something that is big enough, offers enough coverage, and doesn't compress the breast in any way. Anything that "cuts" into the breast can also lead to clogged ducts. I personally prefer the soft "sleeping" style bras. I got my first one for a few dollars on clearance at Target. I also ordered some off of Amazon. The nice thing about this style of bra is that the lack of cup means you don't have to get the size exactly perfect, which is great because your breasts will constantly change with breastfeeding.

7. Glow Baby App (free version; premium version available)

Following my c-section and long labor, I was a mess for about a week. I couldn't keep track of the days or hours, and when I did fall asleep, I was extremely disoriented when I woke up. None of this works well with trying to keep track of a tiny human, when they're eating, and their bodily functions. They had me tracking on paper at the hospital, and I think the nurses filled out that paper more than I did. Fortunately I started using the Glow Baby App, and it became a lot easier to keep track of things because I always had my phone with me. Once I was home, the app is what made it possible for my lactation consultant and I to pinpoint that my baby just wasn't effectively nursing, and that's why he wasn't thriving. Now that I'm pumping, the app is absolutely necessary to me to track why I pump as well, and keep track of what he's eating versus what I'm producing. Also, now that my son is teething (at six weeks!), it also helps me keep track of his medicine doses. In my permanent state of sleep deprivation, it has become an absolute must have.

8. Nursing Cover

You may not need a nursing cover. If you are comfortable whipping it out to feed the baby around others, I fully support that decision. For those who are less comfortable, nursing covers are a great option (while baby is still small enough to not pull them off anyway). I can't recommend a particular brand because mine was handmade by my childhood best friend. I recommend getting something that doubles as a carseat cover if you have a pumpkin seat.

9. Traditional Medicinals Mother's Milk Tea (price varies by source and region)

If you have any concerns about your milk supply, this tea is an easy way to increase your output. It has fenugreek in it, which is a known herb for increasing your milk supply. It is tasty with a spot of milk and some sweetener, but I have also drank it plain. Be warned, if you're supplementing with fenugreek, you will probably develop a maple syrup body odor. I noticed it in my sweat and my milk.

10. Lularoe Irma ($35)

The Lularoe Irma, which is a specific kind of high low tunic, is fantastic for breast feeding. I would throw it behind my head without pulling my arms out of the sleeves. If I needed to cover up, it was easy to toss the front of the shirt back over my head and over the baby. I wear an XS Irma, and it was still plenty stretchy to use for this reason. The Irma is available in a large range of prints and sizes, and I tend to get mine second hand so I can get them at a good price.

11. Water

This one seems fairly obvious, but it's so important you drink enough water. Dehydration will decrease your output immediately. There are a lot of cute water bottles on Etsy to help motivate mommas, but the best thing I've found to do is drink a glassful (ie: 1-3 cups) of water during the 20-30 minutes I'm pumping. More is of course better, but one big glass is non-negotiable.

12. Belvita Breakfast Crackers (price varies by source and region)

Most of the time, I am lucky to have one hand free, and even less likely to have both hands. I have found that Belvita Breakfast Crackers are my jam. They have oats in them, which have also been tied to increasing your output, but are much more convenient than making a bowl of oatmeal, or even whipping up a smoothie. There are a ton of different options, and between my boyfriend and I, we tend to get a box of each kind.

13. Rachel Rene's Vegan Deodorant Sticks ($5.50 - $16.50)

I switched to aluminum free deodorants long before I was expecting, but I feel like it's especially important while breastfeeding. Now that my milk is in, I can tell how far over my alveolar cells are in my armpit. I can't imagine putting a deodorant on that had aluminum in it; I would be extra paranoid. This deodorant is also vegan, paraben-free, alcohol-free, and free of bactericides.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-67694581282052471122017-05-28T12:07:00.001-07:002017-08-01T10:05:22.185-07:00Mommy Must Haves - NewbornI've had a newborn for a little over a month now, and I want to share with you what I consider a must have. I plan on creating a separate list for breastfeeding must haves, and exclusive pumping must haves, because I have some opinions about those as well.

As always, every baby, and every mommy, is different. My words are not gospel. But if you're filling your registry and you're not really sure what to put on it, these are things I think will enhance those first weeks with your baby. This list is not all-inclusive, and it does not go in any particular order.

1. Medela Pump In Style Advanced ($139 for the starter kit; $299.99-$359.99)

Whether you are breastfeeding or exclusively pumping, this pump is a must have (if you are planning on purchasing a pump, anyway). There are several other options on the market, but I have been extremely happy with mine. My little guy had a hard time latching, so presently we are exclusively pumping and this pump has made that bearable.

2. My Breast Friend Nursing Pillow (about $20-$60; varies by type and cover)

If you are breastfeeding, you need this pillow. I do like my Boppy for other reasons (see #3), but as a nursing pillow, the Breast Friend is hands down the most functional option on the market. Both the lactation consultant at the hospital I delivered at, as well as the one at my pediatrician, use the Breast Friend.

OR

2. Dr. Brown's Options Wide Neck Bottles (price varies by size and quantity)

Breast milk or formula, these bottles are phenomenal. They are so great in fact that I am willing to wash twice as many bottles now that I' not feeding directly from my Medela storage bottles. These make such a difference with my gassy, fussy baby, I don't want to try anything else. I opted for the Wide Neck and Options version because of the removeable vent and new Sippy Spouts adapter to allow the bottles to grow with my son from newborn to toddler. I love these bottles so much in fact that I purchase the various kits (depending on the mommy's need) as baby shower gifts!

Added 8/1/17: Sippy Spouts are now offered for the classic options bottles as well now, so I actually have some of both and like both!

3. Boppy Nursing Pillow ($30-$50)

Like I said before, I was not crazy about nursing with the Boppy. My "tiny" baby (6 pounds 4 ounces at his lowest weight) felt like he was going to slip between me and the pillow if I moved the wrong way. However, I do love the Boppy for propping my little dude up to bottle feed him while I pump in the middle of the night, and for all of the other amazing things it can do with baby based on his age. Keep in mind if you do prop baby up on the pillow as a newborn, you have to keep an eye on his neck. If his chin is hitting his chest, you need to re-position him to prevent suffocation. This is true of any surface you put baby on.

4. Swings or Bouncers (price varies by brand and model)

My boyfriend picked this as his must have choice. We personally have the Fisher-Price My Little Snugapuppy Cradle 'n Swing, and absolutely love it. You can rotate the swing in different directions, it has various speeds, multiple music options, and a mobile to keep baby's attention (as his eyes develop). When the baby would not let us put him down anywhere, the swing was our only escape. Thank you, Fisher Price.

5. Sleepers (any brand, whatever you can afford)

My personal favorites are Carter's for their consistent quality and cute designs, but if Carter's is too pricey, and you can't catch them on a sale, get whatever you can. Sleepers are the best thing to happen to your newborn life. The baby is cozy and happy, you can easily open them to change his or her diaper; everyone wins. My son pretty much lived in sleepers the first month of his life; then it got warm and it was romper season for all of the same reasons. But seriously, he had no fat on his tiny little body, and the sleepers kept him from being cold and bitter all the time.

6. Pack 'n Play (again, whatever you can afford)

We personally were gifted a Graco Pack 'n Play Playard Quick Connect Portable Napper with Bassinet in Teddy from my Mother-in-law. We originally wanted this particular pack and play because we were tight on space, and it had the bassinet for while our son was a newborn, as well as the changer. Then we were planning on using the main part of the pack and play with a mattress as his crib until we moved into our house (he would be about a year old at that time). However, we ended up moving into a two bedroom and got a crib and changing table. Do we use either at this time? Nope. Our son hasn't even touched his crib. He refuses to lay alone on flat surfaces (despite swaddling, etc, etc). We'll get there eventually, but for now, we've been using his pack and play in our bedroom.

7. Baby Blanket ($10+)

One of the very first gifts we were given for the baby was a blanket with his name embroidered on it. I had no idea how necessary this blanket was going to be! We have this particular blanket, and it measures 30 x 40 inches. We use this blanket to wrap up the baby, to cover him on the way to the car, to cover the carseat, in the stroller, etc. It's the right size as well to grow into his toddler years as well. I had no idea how much we would use it, but I'm telling you to trust me on this one.

8. Skip Hop Duo Diaper Bag ($65; though you can find them on sale!)

It is no coincidence that my best friend and I ended up getting the same diaper bag. We also both ended up getting the Duo Double Diaper Bag as well (mine as an overnight bag, hers because she will eventually have another little one). This was one of the few things my boyfriend expressed an opinion on. I figured we would have some custom nerdy bag from Etsy, and I declined getting a Tokidoki x Jujube bag to avoid anything too girly; but instead we ended up with a neutral grey bag. Neutral grey tends to be a theme with our baby purchases, so that Troy can apply his personality as he grows. We can always add patches or buttons to the diaper bag, but you can't change the fabric it's made of. Looks aside, this bag is very functional, and has room for everything we need. I'm still making up my mind how exactly I want to stuff this thing, but having options is not a bad thing.

9. Ubbi Diaper Pail ($69.99)

Ultimately I wanted to cloth diaper. My boyfriend vetoed that idea, and since this is a partnership, we compromised with disposables. I did a lot of research before committing to a pail. I knew this was paramount for us because realistically, Troy will be in diapers for roughly two years, and I do not want the house smelling like dirty diapers during that time. The Ubbi came up again and again as being a fantastic and functional product, so we made the investment. I really like that I don't have to use special bags, because buying refills and all of the waste did not appeal to me. The Ubbi has exceeded my expectations. We haven't smelled stank booty once, and we are truly grateful for that.

10. Graco 4Ever™ Extend2Fit® 4-in-1 Car Seat ($349.99)

This seat is designed to stay with baby from birth to big kid booster. Accordingly, Graco produces the seats with materials that will not expire for ten years. The Extend2Fit version of the 4Ever seat is a new model this year, so mine was just manufactured this January, and will stay with my baby until he is big enough to use a seatbelt. We opted for the Extend2Fit version based on my boyfriend's height. I am a short 5'3", but my boyfriend is around 6" tall. We're assuming that when our little muffin catches up, he's going to be tall. The Extend2Fit verison allows us to rear face longer; we can turn it when he reaches the correct weight, not when he runs out of leg room.

11. Stroller or Baby Carrier (ideally both; varies by brand/style)

This is a must have if you plan to leave the house during the first two months, and aren't using a pumpkin seat (see #10). Pumpkin seats allow you to just carry baby around in his or her seat, but the right stroller system also allows you to place your pumpkin seat in it and go. I was not planning on getting a pumpkin seat, but will be using one in Ubers. I just happened to get lucky that the stroller I put on my registry works with a series of seats (and the compatible seat I am getting is also being gifted now that my friend's son has outgrown it). I was pleasantly surprised to find that my son loves going to the mailbox in his stroller (we live in an apartment complex so it's a fun little walk).

With all of that said about the necessity of a stroller, and alternative is to have a baby carrier. I have a wrap style carrier (the Boba Wrap) and it's what I use if I'm leaving the house with my boyfriend. He'll be in charge of the diaper bag, so the stroller seems unnecessary for most outings. However, if we're going to be outdoors for a while, or walking around in an open area that is going to be too hot for the carrier, I prefer the stroller. For the grocery (which is the most common place I've been going in these early days), the Boba works perfectly for getting the babe to sleep through the whole trip.

I do also have an Infantino carrier I use around the house. It's much easier to get on and off frequently with feeding the baby, pumping milk, changing diapers, etc.

12. Diaper Stash in Multiple Sizes (varies by brand and size)

I made a huge mistake in this department. I was gifted a lot of diapers, both unopened and in the form of diaper cakes. I thought we were all set, as the sizes were mostly size one, but there were also some twos and threes, and even a five. I wanted to have at least one of each size so that as he grows, we're always prepared for the next size up. We were expecting a big baby, so I didn't bother to get Newborn sized diapers.. then my son came three weeks early and got down to 6 pounds 4 ounces, and I was unprepared. The hospital sent us home with nearly two full packs of diapers, so I ordered a big size from Amazon Prime or Prime Now the day we got home... and again later.. and when I ordered the next one, he had outgrown it before it arrived. That box will go to my nephew that will arrive in just a few months. I would rather be overstocked than run out of diapers, ever.

While you're scoping out the diaper deals during your pregnancy, pick up the value sizes of wipes when they go on sale, too. I have so many wipes, but I'm also surprised by how quickly we go through them just from diaper changes. You can certainly use reusable wipes, or even a wet washcloth in a pinch, but it's much easier to just not run out.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-92178096951294741222016-08-09T09:10:00.001-07:002016-08-09T09:10:20.694-07:00Petit Vour Box for June 2016!

It's time for the followup review of my Petit Vour Box for June!! I got the items about a month ago and have had a chance to try everything now! This was my first box with Petit Vour, and it was definitely worth it! It's a $15 per month subscription box, and it's all cruelty free, vegan, and non-toxic. The value of the box I am about to review is $38.50, so it was over double the value of the subscription. Let's talk about the products!
Juice Beauty Green Apple SPF 15 Moisturizer ($18; V, CF, GF):
This was a great product, but a touch too sticky for my liking. I could certainly tolerate it, and I love that it's a clean(er) product. I usually wear an SPF 30 or higher, but for just hanging around the house, I will definitely be able to use this up.

EVOLVh SmartVolume Leave-in Conditioner ($11; V, CF, GF):
I tried this a couple of times and wasn't excited. It's a thicken product, so I assumed I should spray it all over, including near the root. However, when I used it, my hair definitely got oily faster. It didn't make my hair immediately look oily, but by day two, I was already reaching for dry shampoo. If I had a normal or dry scalp, I have a feeling I would have LOVED this.

Suntegrity CPR Lip SPF 30 ($5; V, CF):
I didn't love the texture or staying power of these, but I have a feeling that if it were in a stick format, instead of the sample, I would have enjoyed it much more. If Suntegrity ever sees this, the samples were cute and good for trying multiple colors, but it would be better to have one small sample stick versus the sample pots.

Precious Skin Elixirs Sea Pearl Exfoliating Clay ($4.50; V, CF):
I love waterless cleansers a lot. It makes me extremely happy to not pay for water, and you don't need to use preservatives when you aren't using water, so that's always a good thing. I really enjoy this cleanser and would definitely purchase one day when I get through my ridiculous stash.

Vegan & Cruelty Free!May was a whirlwind of a month!! I worked at so many Ultas this month! I tried a few new things, got some new things in my Vegan Cuts Box, and of COURSE wore lots of Too Faced! Here are the products I was loving this month! As always, all products are cruelty free, and they are vegan unless otherwise stated!

SKINCARE:

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair SPF 40: I am in love with this product. I was worried it was going to be too heavy for my combination, acne prone skin, but I am finding just the opposite! My skin drinks it right in and it makes everything smooth and plump. I haven't had any issues with it making me shiny or sticky, either. My only word of advice is that if you are particularly dry, you will want to supplement with a moisturizer underneath.

First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy: I love this product! I prime my face every day with Too Faced Hangover primer, eyeshadow primer (currently using up Urban Decay Anti-Aging Primer), and this below my eyes. It hydrates and plumps the skin, de-puffs, and also slightly color corrects. It is, simply put, the bee's knees.

MAKEUP:

Too Faced Born This Way (in Snow & Nude): I have been wearing Snow for months. I noticed that lately it's not quite enough color, so I've been applying Snow to the center of my face, then mixing it equal parts with Nude to add more color to the borders of my face. I reviewed my favorite foundations and went more in depth here.

Medusa's Makeup Blush in Jezebel: I got this blush in my Vegan Cuts Beauty Box, and instantly fell in love. I visited Chicago maybe five years ago and got my first glimpse of the brand, but never ended up buying any. When I saw it in my box, I was excited. As soon as I tried it on, I knew I was going to be using it often. It's a coral color, but it has a gorgeous pop to it.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Pencil in Moonspoon: I'm a pretty big fan of this exact liner. I can't say I'm a fan of ALL of the 24/7 Pencils, but I do like Moonspoon a lot. I ended up with a LOT of UD liners during my years with Sephora, so I've been trying to use them more lately to use them up before they all dry out. This one is my favorite because it reminds me of the Perfect Eyes in Perfect Storm from Too Faced.

Too Faced La Creme Matte: I don't even have a favorite color, I am in love with all of them! I wear As If! a lot because it goes well with Jezebel from Medusa's Makeup, and Love Hangover from Too Faced. Bachelorette is another gorgeous choice. Pitch Perfect is a purple-fuschia that looks good on everyone. I haven't tried one on yet that I didn't like!

EDIBLES:

Ben & Jerry's Non-Dairy: Holy crap! I CAN'T EVEN. The best non-dairy ice cream I have found is the So Delicious Coconut and Almond Milk varieties. They are still fantastic, but now I am in LOVE with the Ben & Jerry options! I haven't tried one I don't like yet! As a matter of fact, Fudge Brownie is waiting in the freezer for a taste test...

Gamma Labs G Fuel in Mystery Flavor: I have now tried Fazeberry (yum!!), Pineapple and Mystery. The Mystery Flavor smells like the Lik-Em-Stik from Fun Dip, but tastes floral, almost like I would expect cherry blossom to taste. I don't think it's my favorite, but I would buy it again!

Chameleon Cold-Brew and Califia Farms Cold Brew: I have been drinking cold brew for over a year now, and it's amazing how much better my stomach does with it. I used to brew my own, but I started buying the Chameleon Cold-Brew while we were still in Texas. Shortly after, I discovered Califia Farms had cold brew and have often picked up the single serve bottles every time I work in an Ulta or Sephora near a Whole Foods.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-66759898892285938012016-05-04T16:37:00.002-07:002016-05-05T12:05:47.420-07:00My Favorite Vegan and Cruelty Free Foundations! Updated for 2016!!Hello everyone!! I made this post back in 2012 and it is still a very popular post. Unfortunately, two of those foundations are from cruelty free companies anymore! I wanted to post my up to date favorites!
I like different foundations for different reasons, so hopefully one of these foundations can become your holy grail based off of what you're looking for in coverage, finish and format.
1. Too Faced Born This Way in Snow; 1 oz for $39

I adore this foundation, and it is easily my "holy grail" and go to. I first tried this foundation when it launched back in Fall of 2015 while I was still working at Sephora. I tried desperately to make the colors at launch work, but I was quickly losing my summer color and Ivory and Porcelain didn't match me. I held off on buying a bottle until lo and behold! They launched Snow and Pearl in early 2016. In February of 2016, I actually started working for the brand, and the rest is history.

The foundation is oil free, yet does magic on my combination skin. Dry patches aren't exacerbated by the formula, but it also doesn't melt off halfway through the day. It gives a satin matte finish and makes my skin look healthy and plump. I do pair it with the Hangover primer and the Primed & Poreless Pressed Powder to make sure I look perfectly smooth, despite my acne scarring.

I have applied it with several different brushes and sponges. I recommend a BeautyBlender for full coverage, and a rounded buffing brush (like the Teddy Bear Hair Kabuki or a Real Techniques Cheek Brush or Face Expert Brush) for a softer coverage. It has a fantastic dry down time, with plenty of time to blend, but not so much that it lifts as you move on to concealer. The pump top dispenses the perfect amount of product; I use a full pump for a full coverage application. If you are looking for less coverage, I would start with half a pump.

This foundation is best for all skin types, including sensitive and acne prone. Extremely oily skin types have had mixed results with wear. Paula's Choice Beautypedia gives Born This Way four stars out of five!

2. Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation #45; 1 oz for $35

When my breakouts were at their worse, this foundation was the only one that could cover it all up and give me the confidence to go to work every day. It isn't known for being the easiest to work with, or even for having the prettiest finish; it covers up everything, including tattoos. It will never be my holy grail foundation for this reason, but it is right up there. Now that my Snow is too light from Too Faced, I have been mixing in a dab of my KVD #45 to bring up the pigment just a little. I have also worn this mixed with equal parts of my Born This Way when my acne has decided to rear it's angry little head at me. It is also worth noting that I own and am a fan of the powder version of this foundation, as well.

This foundation is an oil free, full, full, full coverage. In all seriousness, this has more coverage than almost any foundation that you have worked with. It has more coverage than anything else in a pump style bottle. I would never recommend this for very dry skin types unless they specifically were seeking the coverage. If you are extremely dry, put this on very well hydrated skin and prepare to use some sort of hydration mist over top throughout the day. The foundation is not transfer proof, despite the claims, but as long as you don't touch it, it will look exactly like it did when you put it on twelve hours earlier.. as a matter of fact, plan to use an oil based cleanser to remove this. It's waterproof.

I prefer this foundation with a damp BeautyBlender or Real Techniques Sponge. You can use a brush with it, but it's much harder to get it to blend as smoothly. You can mix it directly with primer to make it easier to apply, versus applying it on top of primer. Because it is a dry matte finish, it will settle in to any lines or wrinkles. The best way to combat this is to apply the sheerest layer possible in those areas. You will rarely use more than a pump of this, even for the fullest of coverage.

This foundation is best for normal to oily skin types; drier skin types can use it if they properly prep the skin for the dry matte finish. Acne prone skin types will love it for the coverage, but have to be sure to remove it with a waterproof makeup remover as most acne cleansers are foamy and do not remove foundation. Paula's Choice Beautypedia gives Lock-It Foundation a two of our five for many of the reasons I mentioned.

3. Cover FX CC Custom Cover Drops in N20; 0.5 oz for $44

I have never used a product from Cover FX I didn't love. In fact, I am also a HUGE fan of their BB Gel for my acne prone, combination skin (I am a N Light). But the Custom Cover Drops are unlike any product I had used prior. I loved mixing a drop (or five) directly into their Mattifying Primer and applying it for a flawless, matte foundation in the dead of Texas Summer. I loved that I could mix it in with my moisturizer with SPF for a custom tinted moisturizer, or add a drop to a foundation to correct the color or provide more coverage. As someone who has acne, the versatility it offered quickly made it a staple in my beauty routine.

The formula is a concentration of pigment suspended in an oil free delivery system that instantly evaporates to allow only pigment to be left behind. It is not recommended to apply the drops directly; it looks very dry and unnatural (trust me; I tried it). If you apply too much pigment, it can settle into lines and wrinkles, but that is to be expected.

How I applied it varied with what I was mixing it with. When mixed with moisturizer or oil, I typically used my fingers. When using it with a primer, I usually used a fluffy buffing brush. I am using the past tense of these verbs because my bottle is presently empty. I will buy more in the future when I run out of my ridiculous back supply of foundation.

Due to the versatility of mixing this with whatever base you'd like, this foundation option is great for all skin types, including the most sensitive. You can mix it with whatever products you already know work great with your skin, so there is little risk of surprise (outside of the surprise of how good it really looks). Paula's Choice Beautypedia gives the Custom Cover Drops five out of five stars!

4. e.l.f. Acne Fighting Foundation; 1 oz for $6

I remember the first time I tried this I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of this foundation. For only $6, I would compare it to the Kat Von D foundation. It isn't exactly the same, but it would be a dupe in the truest sense of it being a cheaper, comparable product. It gives a lot of coverage and has a dry matte finish. Like the Kat Von D, the coverage doesn't allow the coloring to be very forgiving. Unlike the Kat Von D, it only comes in a disappointing eight shades. I am lighter and more neutral than the two lightest shades (Ivory and Porcelain), but I can make them work for $6.

I typically apply this foundation with a fluffy blending brush like the Real Techniques Buffing Brush. You can also easily apply it with a sponge, or even a classic flat paddle foundation brush. It is relatively forgiving and doesn't have a super fast dry down.

This foundation is intended for acne prone skin types and isn't meant for everyone. It is specifically an acne foundation. However, the Beautypedia specifically states that the pH level is too high for the salicylic acid to do much good, so it probably can be for most skin types. It is a cheaper foundation, so it's no surprise that Paula's Choice Beautypedia gives the Acne Fighting Foundation a two out of five stars. The quality of ingredients just isn't as high, period.

Honorable Mention: Pacifica Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream; 1 oz for $16

This was going to be #5 on the list, but I can't do that and not feel like I'd be lying, so instead it makes the list as an honorable mention. Like so many BB creams, this only comes in one shade. Because it only comes in one shade, I can't love it. I wear it under lighter powders and mix it with my too light foundation from NARS (All Day Radiant in Siberia), but by itself, I just don't love it. If you are a light to medium complexion and not paper white like myself, you would probably love this. But for my pale girls, expect the usual problem of needing to somehow make it a shade or two lighter. That said, if you have #3 on this list, that's a easy enough task!

This is a radiant finish, so I wouldn't recommend this to oily skin types who spend most of their time trying to bring down the shine on their face. It does also have small shimmer particles in it as well, so if you're not a fan of those, I would steer clear of this. I think it gives me skin a pretty glow and I don't feel oily as long as I set it with a powder.

Pacifica products aren't rated on Paula's Choice Beautypedia at this time. From looking over the ingredients myself, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of filler ingredients, and it looks like a lot of plant based antioxidants are in there. It does have jojoba esters in it, meaning it is certainly not an oil free product.
I adore the company and everything they stand for, and I am very happy to be on the team! I picked up the new Chocolate Bonbons palette, and planned to be on a no-buy for a while. That didn't last when I walked into my Northgate store and saw how gorgeous the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette was in person. I had to have it. I expected to not like it much since I can't usually do warm browns, but something about this palette was different.

The warm browns almost have a copper toned element that makes them look great with my eye color. I have hazel eyes, and I struggled to decide if the palettes colors make them pull more green or brown. Ultimately, I think it depends on which colors I wear, but I feel like they typically pull more green with this palette.

Overall, the palette is everything I expect from Too Faced. The eyeshadows are smooth and silky and blend easily. The textures are nice and easy to work with. Even the more glittery shades were fun to work with, and I was able to easily avoid fallout. Basically, you could say this is a "no ragrets" kind of buy. Honestly, my only regret is that when I wear it into stores, they're usually sold out of it!

Star Wars: the Force Awakens ushers in a new era of Star Wars. It has a new director, features lots of new characters, and has a makeup collection. Iconic makeup artist and head of cosmetics with Proctor and Gamble, Pat McGrath did what she does best: create. She started with six iconic looks inspired by the Force Awakens, and designed new cosmetics based off of them.

Looking at the editorial shots, it's easy to see where Pat drew her inspirations. Each look launched a new lipstick color, and fans of C-3PO will immediately recognize his signature gold in her Droid look, and respective Colorlicious Lipstick in Gold #40 ($6.99*).

There are five other lipsticks inspired by Star Wars icons on both the Light and Dark Sides of the Force. After Droid (C-3PO) brought us golds on the Light Side, Jedi shows a soft Nude #70 lip, and Mystic has Lilac #20. The Dark Side has Stormtrooper inspired Dark Purple #50, Dark Apprentice shows the familiar Red #30, and Chrome Captain brings us an icy Silver #10.

There are six Outlast Nail Polishes ($5.49*) in the collection as well, though they do not seem to directly correlate with the makeup looks (it appears other permanent Outlast shades were used). Those shades are Fury #93 (intense crimson), Nuclear #97 (chemical green), Mutant 101 (bold blue), Red Revenge 180 (deep red color), Nemesis 195 (medium eggplant) and Speed of Light 200 (pale grey). There are also photos and swatches of Emerald Blaze 50 on blogger pages, but not with the official Star Wars x Covergirl Collection on covergirl.com.

The other release in the line is truly designed for the collector in all of us. It features ten variations in packaging of their pre-existing Supersizer mascara ($6.85*) in Very Black with iconic Star Wars quotes. There are five for the Light Side, featured on their waterproof formula, and five for the Dark Side, on their classic formula. Choose a Side, or go ahead and collect all 10; we're certainly not judging.

*Prices vary by location and retailer and are from covergirl.com; also available where ever Covergirl cosmetics are sold.
Note to Gary: All products used will be linked to their archive location on CS. Also, there are more product photos if you would like more added.
Let's see what I got!

Now! Let's break it down the first impressions of these products!

Super Shock Eyeshadows ($5.00 each): in my order, I got at least one of each type of finish. The finish that I'm the most impressed with is definitely the matte colors. They have SO much pigmentation but go on so smoothly, I am crazy impressed. The glitters are pretty as are the metallic finishes, but the mattes are the ones that most brands struggle with and these are absolutely spot on. They're also the most sponge-y. The sponge-y-ness is what makes their shadows so unique, and also susceptible to drying out; close those lids tight!

Box of Chocolate Collection ($30.00): I LOVE their collections. I actually want one of each one on the site. The way they're packaged is really cute and I plan on keeping my collection boxes to display on a shelf. I am a sucker for packaging. The colors are amazing and I'm glad that this was my first collection from Colourpop. I really recommend this one.

Super Shock Cheek Colors ($8.00): I got the Smoke N Whistles highlighter and I am madly in love. I've used it as a brow and inner corner highlight with a brush a lot, and also on the cheeks with my fingers. I think I would love it with my Real Techniques Setting Powder brush as well. I use that brush for undereye powder though so I'll have to get a second one to try it.

Ultra Matte Lips ($6.00 each): These are everything I've wanted a liquid lipstick to be. They are super pigmented. They go on so easily. They wear down pretty evenly. They come in a HUGE range of shades. And most importantly, they're only $6!! I am very happy with the four I have, and want to order more soon.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-35864479106103592302015-08-12T08:01:00.000-07:002015-08-12T14:34:51.975-07:00Makeup Rules For Anyone New to MakeupWhen I say new to makeup, I meant anything from the twelve year old who's school allows visible makeup this year, to the thirty year old who has never worn makeup but is interested in learning. You can learn how to apply makeup at any age, and you are never too old. The thing that shocks me is not how many grown women don't know how to apply makeup, but how many of them are embarassed to ask. Applying makeup is not some inherit skill that you were born with (unless you actually are a makeup artist by trade; and even some of the people that do makeup had to learn it, it didn't come naturally). It's not like learning to walk or remembering to eat. It's something you learn, and if no one ever shows you, you may not know how.

I spend a lot of time teaching people about makeup. Whether s/he is brand new to makeup, or just struggling to get her eyeliner to stay on like how it seems to stay on everyone else, I really have seen almost everything. I've taught transgendered girls how to make their faces more feminine, and I've taught forty year old women how to look pretty and polished before re-entering the dating world or starting a new career. I will rarely say that there are rules in makeup, but if there are, these are five things I would tell you to follow.

1. Be comfortable wearing less. When you start wearing makeup, each thing you wear is going to be scary and new, and dramatically change how you view your own face. The trap that many men and women fall into is they go straight into wearing a Kardashian inspired contour and smoky eye. The do faded brows and big, bold lips. They were full coverage foundation with the most matte finish they can manage. Then they suddenly feel naked without all of those things. The first time a makeup artist puts foundation and concealer on you and maybe a natural eye look, you are already going to feel like you have a TON of crap on your face and you're going to be a little thrown off. That is okay. And it's also okay to say, "This is what I wanted, and I don't want anything else on my face." Anyone who pushes you to contour or tries to make you wear anything you aren't comfortable with isn't worried about what you want. THAT SAID: I am notorious for asking a client to try one new fun thing. I never pressure anyone to buy anything, ever, and I just want people to be comfortable stepping outside of the box. I will probably ask you to wear the scary new thing out of the store and get used to seeing it, but I would NEVER try to pressure you into wearing something you are just not comfortable in everyday; this does the opposite of what we are trying to do, and that is make you confident in your skin. And if you aren't comfortable in it, you aren't going to use it. If you aren't going to use it, don't buy it. It will still be there later when you do have the urge to try something new.

2. Use primers, for eyes, for face, etc. And before you use primers, use moisturizers. Basically, what I'm trying to say is your face is a canvas and if you don't prepare it properly, nothing you put on top can look it's best. Primers may seem like a gimmick and an extra step you just don't want to do, but you absolutely should. If you don't want to do a bunch of extra steps, and hate moisturizer, use a product like Murad's Invisiblur. It isn't super hydrating, but it does have hyuluronic acid to hydrate, smoothing silicone, and SPF 30. Also, your primers and skincare don't need to be expensive, but you absolutely should use them. In a perfect world, we would buy based on quality, and some of the cheaper stuff can be decent quality, but I also know that we can't all afford an $80 face cream and a $40 primer. I am going to try to touch on these more on my youtube. But as I'll say in the next rule, don't go cheap on your face. Cheap eye shadow can be an awesome way to try new colors and a $2 lipstick can change your world, but cheaping out on your complexion can cause breakouts and rashes, and those can cause permanent scars and discoloration.

3. Don't use cheap foundation. I don't even necessarily mean price tag wise, either. There are certain ingredients that are used in cosmetics because they are cheap, work as filler to the formula, and aren't necessarily detrimental. However, those same ingredients are known to be skin irritants and can cause you to break out. When you start getting into makeup and you want to use high end stuff, start with one thing to focus on, and I highly suggest that thing be complexion. If you can lay down the foundation for a great face, everything else will go smoothly. Ingredient to avoid in your foundations are mineral oil, talc, alcohol (it will be on the list, but shouldn't be high), fragrance, and if you don't have a good skincare routine, be careful getting waterproof makeup because it has to be removed with oil based cleansers or cleansers specifically for waterproof makeup. If you are trying to keep your makeup clean and green, also try to avoid gluten, parabens and any other ingredients that sound less like a makeup ingredient and more like a chemical. That said, when it doubt, google it! We are part of an age of technology and your smart phone literally puts the world in the palm of your hand!

4. Remove your makeup, then cleanse. These goes along with using waterproof products, and makeup in general. What we don't realize is that most cleansers do NOT remove makeup. I am going to repeat that for emphasis; most cleansers do NOT remove makeup. They are strictly designed to cleanse the skin, maybe to balance the PH, or exfoliate; but unless they specifically say they will remove your makeup, they won't. There are plenty of cleansers on the market that will take off your makeup and wash your face, but they aren't as common as the manufacturers would have you believe. And the ones that do? I recommend double cleansing. Double cleansing is traditionally done with an oil based product first, followed by something a little bit more "squeaky clean" to actually cleanse the skin. That said, if you hate the idea of an oil, or only want to use one product, then use a cleanser that removes makeup, and use it twice. I will tell you though, oil based cleansers are life changing when you find one that works great with your skin. I'm combination oily, and Boscia's Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil changed my life. I have found others that I like since then, but that was the first one that made me re-evaluate how I feel about oil cleansers.

5. Tools don't have to be expensive, they just have to work. I have a huge array of brushes, and have spent plenty of time in the youtube world being told what brushes are OMG MUST HAAAAVES. I have tried everything from $1 brushes from ELF, to $50+ brushes from high end labels. What I have found is that a brush that works, works. It doesn't care about it's price tag. If you want to buy a set of brushes, I highly recommend looking for unbiased reviews of brush sets. In a perfect world, youtube gurus would honestly review every single product they are sent, and some do. I am one of those. You can tell who is objectively reviewing the products based off of what they say. Yes, we want soft brushes, but are they so soft that they don't blend products well? How do they compare to a brush that is the same shape from another brand? It's great that they're pretty, but what else? Really listen to what the reviews are saying. Most of my brush collection is Real Techniques, Eco Tools, Sephora brand, and a handful of other brush brands; with those "other" brush brands, they may have one brush that is so unique and necessary that I'm willing to pay extra for it, but don't feel that way about the rest of their line. For those just starting out, of course you can start with cheap ELF brushes; I certainly did. This gives you a chance to really find what brush shapes and styles you use before you splurge on something that should last you for years to come. Also, because if no one tells you, you'll never know: natural hair brushes are only for powders. You should not use them with any sort of liquid or cream product. I have a few random natural hair brushes, but due to my cruelty free stance on cosmetics, most of my brushes are synthetic. If you want to go all synthetic, you certainly can. The reason why synthetic brushes have limitations is that any synthetic brush that lacks texture can't properly distrubute powder products. Makeup Forever created a unique "wavy" bristle type to combat this issue, and maybe other brands that focus on vegan or synthetic brushes have long since solved this issue. Again, Real Techniques is one of those brands that has mastered the synthetic brush.

And the golden rule: HAVE FUN! Makeup should be fun and the only way you can do it wrong is when you stop enjoying what it does for your life.

And if I can say anything else: tell each other when you have lipstick on your teeth! Tell your friend when her mascara has magically smudged down her cheeks. Tell that stranger that oh no, she's bumped her lipstick and smudged it onto her chin. If you would want someone to tell you, TELL HER/HIM! It's not only polite, it's just the right thing to do! <3 Be kind to each other.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-18536514260982632372015-07-11T08:49:00.000-07:002015-07-11T08:49:16.564-07:00Lavanila Deodorant is the best!I had long been on the search for a vegan deodorant when I started working at Sephora. I had tried many of the drug store ones. I often found products that left me sticky, smelly, or otherwise let down. Then when I started working at Sephora, I decided to give Lavanila a try.

I bought the Trio ($36) back when it launched in May, then bought Sport Luxe ($16) when it launched in June! I keep the little guy ($8) around for hot, sweaty outdoor events that I might need to touch up.

Lavanila deodorants are aluminum free, vegan, and free of major irritants and questionable ingredients. They go on clear and actually hydrate and soothe my pits. The only time I have had issues with them is if I wore too much. If you layer on too much, you may find your pits irritated, or have white residue. I wear all black for my job, and haven't had issues with staining or streaks.

I have tried a huge range of their deodorant, but I started with the classic Pure Vanilla because it smelled slightly sweet and creamy, and went well with the fragrances I wore. I work Pure Vanilla for a couple of years before I started branching out.

What I found with Lavanila was that I still sweat; sweating is a natural response to your body heating rising and a vital coping method for your body. However, I didn't smell or have a funk to me afterwards. It controlled the bacteria produced with sweat, and thus, the body odor. And because it's a more natural product, I have no fear of placing it on other parts of my body that sweat.

Lavanila recently released a Sport Luxe version of their deodorant. I bought one as soon as I could get it back in stock. Several co-workers bought it and tried it as well. We are all having similar results. Better control of smell and sweat, which is important since we live in Texas. The other big thing I noticed is the formula is less creamy, which I'm sure is useful for helping with the sweat factor. When looking at the ingredients list, the biggest difference is the drying factors (corn starch and silica) are slightly higher in the list.

All of Lavanila's deodorants are vegan and cruelty free. They have made a lot of changes with the company over the last couple of years, which has allowed them to stay small and independent. They are primarily focused on body care now, versus in the past they had more skincare and babycare items. I have used their products for years and definitely recommend them. Their deodorant sticks come in two sizes, a small travel size and the larger 2 oz size. Swing by Sephora, Amazon, or Lavanila.com to try them out today!m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-25099476409693521192015-07-11T08:22:00.000-07:002015-09-03T09:22:15.367-07:00Cruelty Free Brands at My SephoraDisclaimer: This post is specific to my location.
Tarte*: has been bought by Kose. I am having a hard time finding any information on this brand in general. They are a Japanese brand so I'm assuming they sell in mainland China, but I honestly don't know. If you have helpful information on the brand (in english), please link me!
Kat Von D**: is a Sephora brand. There for, it is Kendo, and falls under the LVMH umbrella. I list her here because for some reason a lot of people are still totally comfortable buying her despite this.
Korres***: Korres has taken control of their company again and become independent. The worrisome thing is their products have been seen on websites that operate in mainland China. The brand is claiming it's unauthorized and is working to get the items removed. For now, I believe them, but we'll have to see what the future holds for Korres.
I have since taken Murad & Kate Somerville off of the list. In June they were both purchased by Unilever. This doesn't change my opinion; you guys know I'm brutally honest. Also, these items are not cruelty free, and they are not vegan.

I received the Influester Voxbox for the Ultimate Straight hair system from L'Oreal Paris USA. It's a four piece system including your usual shampoo and conditioner, but also a pre-conditioner and a smoothing balm. I really like the packaging for these products because I can tell what they are without having my contacts in, which is not unheard of when I shower.

The packages are easy to tell apart when I'm half blind.

Straightening Shampoo: My hair is a medium texture, completely virgin, and my primary concerns are frizz and my oily scalp. I always shampoo twice, and I only wash my hair twice a week. That means I need a shampoo to be clarifying, but not leave my hair dry. This shampoo fit the bill. This leaves my hair straight and smooth, but without leaving a build up in my hair. I was pleasantly surprised. Shampoo is the hardest for my hair.

Straight Boosting Pre-conditioner: The first time I used this, I didn't completely read the instructions and rinsed it out. I wasn't sure it made a difference, until I used it a second time, following the directions. I definitely think this makes a difference in my hair, and I would rather use a rinse out pre-condition than a leave in product.

Straightening Conditioner: I really like this conditioner. It is thick and easy to work with, but it rinses cleanly and doesn't leave my hair weighed down. I am a fan. My hair is silky and soft, but not heavy or oily. There really isn't much else to say, it's exactly what my hair needs.

Straight Perfecting Balm: This is a product that I think would be helpful if I was actually heat styling. I tried a little of it and didn't hate it, but it wasn't what I really like to use. I prefer something I can spritz where I need it, instead of balms or creams that I have to work through my hair. I think girls with course hair or those who are actually using a flat iron would love this balm. I may pass this on to one of the girls at work to try, or try it in Aaron's hair.

Overall // Tl; Dr: I would recommend this system! My hair seems to be doing well with it. I could also see this working for a large range of hair textures and types. If you do any chemically processing to your hair (treatment, color), it's important that you know that this is not a sulfate free line.
UPDATE: I am posting this update on 8/28/2015. I am experiencing a TON of hair loss. The only thing that has changed is this shampoo. My last shower, I switched to another shampoo and conditioner and I'm already noticing less hair loss. I don't know what to say about that. I don't want to say it was making my hair fall out, but it appears to have been the cause.

As I run out of their products (which I often buy in multiples), I will find new, cruelty free products to replace them. Items that are not cruelty free will have some sort of alternative offered in their description. Also, many of these items were gratis from my work. This does not effect my opinion on them; if it works, it's here.

Please note: Shortly after writing this post, I found out that Kate Somerville had been bought out by Unilever. Sadly, she is still a cruelty free brand, but her parent company is not.

MORNING ROUTINE:

Clarisonic Plus ($245; discontinued): I have had my Clarisonic for several years, since I first started with Sephora. I had also started getting acne the summer before I started, so the Clarisonic seemed like a necessity. I have finally found a happy routine with my Clarisonic, as no two faces are the same. I use mine a few mornings a week with a glycolic cleanser. I use the Acne brushhead, which makes a huge difference. The Acne brush head is specifically designed to not move bacteria around the face. I had tried several other brush heads (Sensitive, Deep Pore), but found they typically made me break out worse. Unfortunately, Clarisonic was acquired by L'Oreal and is no longer a cruelty free brand. At present, I don't have a cruelty free alternative for you. I am, however, finding information that L'Oreal was required by their parent country to go cruelty free, so fingers are crossed that more research opens that option for us cruelty free shoppers!

Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid 3% Wash ($38; Sephora.com): I use this as my morning cleanser to keep my skin clear and fresh. Glycolic acid unglues dead skin and is a must have for anyone with concerns with acne or aging. Peter Thomas Roth recently entered the mainland Chinese market and is no longer cruelty free, which is geniunely shocking and I hope it is a decision he will reconsider. In the mean time, use Dermadoctor's Wrinkle Revenge I cleanser or Anthony Logistics Glycolic Cleanser; both are available at Sephora.com.

Kate Somerville Clarifying Toner ($26; Sephora.com): I love this toner. It doesn't leave my face "tingly fresh" or any of that silliness, but it does leave it clean feeling. I love that it's alcohol free, and prefer that it doesn't tingle; tingle generally means irritation. It has phytic acid to help fade acne scars and post inflammation hyperpigmentation, and it has nordihydroguiuaretic acid to help with inflammation. It's not that expensive, and a bottle will last ages if you're not trying to soak your face and your cotton round everyday.

Kate Somerville DermalQuench Clear ($65, Sephora.com): DermalQuench Clear is my go to in the winter, and in summer I prefer the HydraClear Acne Gel. DermalQuench Clear has a low dose, encapsulated slow release salicylic acid so that it'll clear up blemishes and decongest pores, but never irritate the skin or leave you dry as a desert. It has peptides to firm and plump the skin, and hyluronic acid to give you hydration that doesn't quit. I seriously love it. It smells a little odd, but it hasn't been enough to stop me from using it. This and the Gel are must haves for my routine. Kate Somerville is a cruelty free brand, and they claim to be vegan outside of Goat's Milk in the Goat's Milk line, but I think they are forgetting that beeswax is considered a non-vegan product. If you are extremely oily and want a higher salicylic acid, I recommend DermaDoctor's Ain't Misbehavin'. It also has glycolic, nordihydroguiuaretic and salicylic acid, but it's a 2% salicylic.

Tarte Tarte Guard SPF 30 ($38, Sephora.com): I have tried many, many SPF products in an attempt to find one that didn't break me out. This one does fantastic with my skin. I am also extremely combination, so I love that this gives tons of hydration because when I put a mattifying primer on top, it is the perfect balance for my skin. I wish it were an SPF 50, but I can't have it all. Tarte was purchased by Japanese company Kose in the beginning of 2015, and I am still finding conflicting information about that company. Tarte was recertified by Leaping Bunny, so I'm hoping they remain a cruelty free brand.

Cover FX Mattifying Acne Primer ($16-$38; Sephora.com): This primer is a definitely game changer for me. It doesn't leave my face bone dry like the Becca primer that everyone loves. Instead, it keeps my skin balanced and my makeup on my face. I don't look shiny, but I also don't look like a desert; I would call it a healthy glow. Since I started using this primer, I have seen a huge difference in my skin. I am not certain that the previous primer and foundation that I thought weren't breaking me out actually were. Of course, one skin does not fit all, but it's worth a try! Cover FX is a vegan and cruelty free company.

Cover FX Custom Cover Drops ($44, Sephora.com): I mix these directly into the primer and put it all on in one step. I love being able to control the coverage. I have experimented with mixing it into other things, but I have found that this is the combination I love the most that also works the best for my skin.

NIGHTTIME ROUTINE:

Fresh Soy Conditioning Eye Makeup Remover ($38; Sephora.com): I use this to remove my eye makeup. I prefer the lotion texture or gel texture for eye makeup removers, not the liquids. When I use Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil, I skip this step, but with the Milk Oil from FAB, I need something to start the mascara breakdown. Unfortunately, LVMH owns Fresh, so you will have to draw your own conclusions about their cruelty free status.

First Aid Beauty Milk Oil Conditioning Cleanser ($26; Sephora.com): I have started using this since I ran out of my Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil. I do prefer the Boscia to this, but only slightly. When I use this, I am using six pumps of it, which may be excessive to some, but I beat on a full face everyday for work so six pumps feels about right. You definitely want to shake it well every time you use it. I remove the cleansing milk oil with a konjac sponge (I have them from Sephora Collection and Boscia; Boscia is the cruelty free option). It melts off all of my makeup and leaves my skin soft and refreshed.

Dr. Dennis Gross Hydra-Pure Face Cream ($125; Sephora.com): This moisturizer is incredibly unique. It is heavy and hydrating, but not oily and it doesn't really feel heavy on your skin. I was incredibly hesitant to try this due to how thick it is, but my amazing rep Enrique convinced me to try it. It leaves my skin soft, hydrated and protected. It's my favorite moisturizer to use after a peel or anything else that leaves my skin a little raw or otherwise compromised. I don't use it every night, but I certainly could. During the drying winter months it was a necessity.

Bare Bones Body Care Face Oil ($25 on sale, barebonesbody.com): I actually received this in a giveaway on Instagram and fell in love with it. It absorbs quickly, but leaves my skin so soft and hydrated. I am a huge fan of face oils, but I tend to try several different ones since they tend to be so specific to their uses. I was previously using Sunday Riley's Artemis Oil with tea tree oil mixed in, but that got to be a hassle and smelled a little odd. This one smells like hemp and citrus, but it has tea tree oil already mixed in so I'm a happy girl. My skin seems to love this one.

Kate Somerville Eradikate ($24; Sephora.com): The infamous pink spot treatment... we meet again. This spot treatment will suck the bacteria and oil out of a blemish, and calm the redness and irritation. I put it on breakouts at night as the last step of my skincare routine. It does a great job at reducing the life of a blemish. Also, if I decide to extract a blemish, this definitely goes on afterwards to draw anything left over out of the pore. I'm such a fan of this stuff that I wore it at work one day on a particularly nasty blemish because the pink sulfur was less red than the huge zit on my cheek. Unfortunately, it happened to be the day that previous Sephora CEO David Suliteneau vistited the store. What are the chances.. ha.

MAINTENANCE:

First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads ($15-$30; Sephora.com): These were my nightly serum for a very long time. I would use them after I cleansed and before I moisturized. When they ran out, I stopped doing that step all together because I'm pretty lazy at night. I will definitely add them back in if I feel like I need to. They're inexpensive, gentle and very effective.

REN Glycol Lactic Radiance Peel ($58; Sephora.com): This was the first peel I found that would exfoliate my skin and brighten my PIH, but didn't leave me beet red and raw. I used this peel exclusively for a year before I started finding other products that worked with my skin as well. Sadly, REN was bought out by Unilever so they are no longer cruelty free. I actually threw this away after taking this photo because I noticed the product had changed color.

Boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel ($28; Sephora.com): This peel gel is a gentle, non-abrasive way to remove skin. It's gentle enough to use daily. It unglues the dead skin, balls it up and washes it away. I love to use this product below my eyes and on my cheek that frequently breaks out when there is a texture build up. One warning, if you have facial hair, it will stick to it so be prepared for that. It's still totally worth it.

Kate Somerville Glycolic Polisher (n/a; discontinued): This 10 minute peel was a staple product through Kate Somerville for years. It's essentially a glycolic acid that you can use alone as a peel or mixed into moisturizer for an overnight mask. I love this product. It was replaced by a more powerful version with retinol. I haven't tried the new version yet, but it's gotten good reviews.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta MediSpa Peel ($125; Sephora.com): I love, love, love this peel. It does a fantastic job of fading my discoloration (both scars and PIH), as well as getting rid of texture on my skin and helping to kill active breakouts. I use this peel once a week and absolutely love it. I can't recommend it enough. It's a little pricy, but it's a four month supply.

Glam Glow ($69; Sephora.com): I have tried most of the Glam Glow products. Powermud is a great once a week detox mask that I like to use on a day off that I don't have to wear any makeup. It's a mud mask that turns into an oil cleanser, so it leaves my skin feeling hydrated and clean. It smells like apples. The Clearingmud was my go to for acne, but due to how dry it makes my skin, and the acquisition by Estee Lauder, I've started exploring other masks in an attempt to replace it. It's a great mask, I wish the brand would have stayed independent.
Seriously, it's a fact. The Bride arrived in the mail and it was love at first sight.

In the picture above, I have primed my eye with Optimus primer & applied Black Hole, starting at the outer corner of the eye and blending it inward and up into the crease.

I applied the Silence in the exact same fashion here, using a fluffy brush for a soft finish. We're doing the Silence before the Bride because of the texture differences.

I added MSC's the Bride literally all over the lid, blending it out toward the browbone and into the inner corner of the eye.

I added a healthy dose of Adipose into the inner corner of the eye, as well as heavily concentrated as a dramatic brow highlight (start in the arch and blend toward the front of the brow, the end, and lastly down into the crease).

I tightlined the top with Perversion, but got a little heavy with it to make it stand out a little more, and added Fascinating to the lower waterline to keep the look from getting too dark.

I added the Lash Primer, and before it had a chance to dry completely, I added Gifted over top. I've learned that you have to do this with the Lash Primer, otherwise it's a little too crunchy to apply mascara over.

& you're done! I have Rebel Lollipop on my cheeks in this shot & I'm in love with it. I'm sorry I've been MIA for a while. I'll have a vlog/blog up soon to tell you where I've been. Right now I'm using my landlord's internet (with his permission of course), so there's a pretty big hint to why I've been gone.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-16187908568037597222013-01-23T19:16:00.000-08:002013-01-23T19:16:21.623-08:00Mail time: Plant Fusion Vegan Protein Powders!I wasn't expecting to be doing a blog on this today, but the package
came & I was too excited to not share this right away with you
guys! I recently spoke with Scott of Plant Fusion to inquire about
their protein powder. I'd heard a lot of great things and wanted to try
the different flavors before I bought a tub because something like
Chocolate Raspberry sounds great in theory, but can go terribly wrong in
powder form, haha. I am excited to say that he went above and beyond
with this package! I can't wait to try all of the flavors out &
give a full write up because I know a LOT of protein powder users feel
the same way about flavors as I do.. "could be good, could be very, very
bad."

Influenster sent me this lovely box right here! It is the Palmolive Box, and as someone who likes the consistency of their dish soap, I'm pretty excited to be chosen to review them.

Please note: I do not think that Palmolive is a cruelty free brand. They are a Colgate-Palmolive company, and while they seek alternative testing, they still test any new products intended for oral use on animals (due to federal regulations?).

In this box, I recieved three of their new scents; Lime Basil, Ginger White Tea and Lemon Thyme. I was very happy with the bright colors when I opened the box. All three scents smell fresh and amazing, but I was really shocked by how delicious the Lime Basil smelled. And thank goodness, because it had leaked inside of the box. I was initially surprised that these pakages weren't sealed under the cap, but then I realized I didn't think they ever had been when I purchased them in store, either. Regardless, I'm just glad much didn't leak out due to the mess factor, and because it would have wasted what is definitely my favorite scent of the bunch.

I have been using the Lime Basil scent since these arrived. I was trying to use up the MEGA bottle of dish soap I just bought, but frankly, I couldn't wait. The smell is like seriously intoxicating, and Clancy keeps making fun of me for sniffing it (yes, even still, weeks later). It smells like something familiar to me, yet I can't place it. The performance of the product is impressive. It works like a concentrated formula. It suds up nicely and stays in your sponge much longer than I'm used to. I was very pleased by how little I had to use. I was initially worried about the small size of these bottles, but now that I've used it, I know a little goes a long, long way.

I'm supposed to share the coupons that came with the box, but I love the formula so much I'm tempted to hoard them to myself. I won't, in good faith. This is a dish soap that I would definitely repurchase based off of performance, concentration, packaging and the amazing scents. I definitely think Palmolive nailed it with these.

Disclaimer: As stated, these items were sent to me for review from Influenster (not from Palmolive). As always, I reserve the right to my honest opinion.m0mmyb0thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13100764728679293707noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072826518355301325.post-19141404995093452752013-01-23T15:42:00.000-08:002013-01-23T15:43:55.527-08:00Mailtime & Review: Sunwarrior Protein & Supplements!

I spoke with Ashley at Sunwarrior to find out more about the brand and she was very friendly and customer service oriented! She sent me some samples to try out because, as you guys know, Clancy is helping me eat better and we're about to join a gym... he's essentially my personal trainer. He makes me smoothies pretty regularly, and I bought myself a blender bottle for on the go. Several of these mixes are perfect for just mixing with "milk", water or coconut water on the go, so I took them to work with me and drank them during my long hours in retail. For those of you who don't know, that's putting a LOT of trust into the brand, haha.
MORE ABOUT EACH ONE (all quotes are directly from Sunwarrior's website):
Immune Shield (8 fl oz for $29.95) - "is a natural Fulvic acid mineral complex fortified with silver ions." What does that mean? I asked Clancy what it would do for the immune system, and he said that while it wouldn't do much in the way of a "shield", it would give the immune system a boost. Regular consumption could, in theory, then perform a shield, but I doubt we'll see a lot of results from our one use. I didn't notice any sort of funny taste to my smoothie, but I didn't try it alone to see how it was.

Activated Barley (1lb for $29.95) - "plays a significant role in lowering cholesterol and controlling glucose and insulin levels. Barley also has high concentrations of age fighting antioxidants and health boosting beta-glucans. Beta-glucans improve immune function, raise energy levels without sugar spikes, and reduce cholesterol." Barley is well known as a replacement for wheat due to it's gluten free properties, but I didn't realize that it was a "slow burning" carb. Sounds like it's a better 'flour' choice for protein/meal replacement bars, and something I'm going to have to look into a little more.

Ormus Supergreens (1lb for $54.95) - are unique in the sense that they are cold-processed to be "raw" greens, as well as contain natural probiotics (not added ones). These greens are grown in volcanic soil which lends trace minerals to the plants and gives them "magnetic propert[ies]". So why do we need Supergreens? They are essentially the boost your diet is missing from not getting enough of the best vegetables on a regular basis. Many ingredients in supergreen formulas are some of the best "greens" you can eat, with high vitamin and mineral levels that you simply won't find, even in broccoli.. although broccoli is pretty good for you! These didn't have much of a green taste and blended nicely in just my blender bottle. Definitely a great green powder.

Liquid Light (32oz for $34.95) - has a whole list of benefits. It "provides major nutritional elements", "[p]lays an elevated role in the absorption and assimilations of these nutrients through the chelation process", "a powerful natural electrolyte contributing to both electrical and chemical blance within cells", and really, a lot more. The list goes on. It seems like a fantastic item to add to any smoothie or protein drink, or even just your favorite juice. It reminds of Dr. Perricone's Cold Plasma in the sense that it sounds like a carrying device for all of the good stuff you want to put in your body.

Classic Protein (500g for $29.97) - has a complete Amino Acid profile [here], but this is essentially a protein powder with some added vitamins and minerals (which is not to be discredited by any means). I do see a difference in calories : carbs : protein between flavors, and is as follows:
Natural: 80cals : 2g carbs : 17g protein
Vanilla: 80cals : 4g carbs : 15g protein
Chocolate: 80cals : 4g carbs : 16g protein

I'm also seeing that the two flavors (Chocolate & Vanilla) have Stevia in the mix. Anyone with digestive issues knows that artificial sweeteners can be a BIG deal breaker, so we'll have to see how my stomach does with these. I didn't notice any additional stomach issues with the stevia, but I have been in a flare-up for a week already so I don't know if I'd notice, unfortuantely.

Warrior Blend (500g for $26.95) - This is a very different kind of vegan-friendly protein powder. This boasts a complete protein profile (ie: all amino acids are present), as well as claims to be a "great source of energy", "no cholesterol", "heart healthy", increases metabolism", "easy to digest and creates a feeling of satiety" (fullness), "promotes healthy kidney and liver function", is a "green hypoallergenic food", "improves mental clarity", and "helps relieve candida". More imporantly, however, is the calorie : carb : protein ratio:
Natural: 80cals : 1g carb : 17g protein
Vanilla: 80cals : 4g carb : 15g protein
Chocolate: 80cals : 4g carb : 15g protein

Although the ratios aren't much different, these are supposed to be a complete protein, meaning you're getting everything you need. Also, this blend contains fibers in the flavored versions, but also, again, has stevia. Stevia is supposed to be more natural than say.. Sweet N Low, haha, but it still scares me. This is the blend that Clancy would want to order out of the two. It blended well and tasted great.

In conclusion:
Sunwarrior makes insanely delicious protein powders. In comparison to some of the others I've tried on the market, these were all really, really good. I wasn't crazy about the natural flavors, but they were drinkable with a bit of sugar mixed in; they would be ideal for someone who wants to make fruit flavored smoothies without vanilla or chocolate flavoring. The price tag is literally just too steep of what I prefer to pay, wanting to get my soy protein at absolutely no more than $19.99 for 16oz. You're getting just over 17oz for $27 or $30, so this is clocking in a little high for me.. though I will admit, when I have the money, I will definitely be splurging. They're really good.. I can't help it. I asked a friend of mine from work to try the Chocolate Warrior Blend, and she also gave it rave reviews. She said it was "really, really good [...] and didn't give [her] gas!" For those of you who are soy sensitive, this may be really important, as a lot of vegan friendly protein powders are soy based. My friend has had a few protein powders in her day, including vegan friendly Vega powders. She has also had what we're both currently powering through, which is the Trader Joe's Soy Protein. I much prefer the flavor and consistency of either of Sunwarrior's Vanilla blends to Trader Joe's. My friend also said something along the lines of the consistency and taste being much better with the Sunwarrior powder. So what does it come down to? Spend a little more & get a tastier, smoother protein powder that is definitely worth it in the long run. The good news? It's still cheaper than some of the other loved vegan protein powders out there, and definitely better than most of the cheaper ones out there. If you're on the fence, try it. You won't be disappointed.
