Snow Day Smoothies!

These have nothing to do with snow; in fact, they're much more tropical & fruity than snowy. The only reason these are snow day smoothies is that I'm in the midst of a snow day!! =D

Not pictured?  The bananas.  This was after
I'd made the smoothie.. hence the drank from glass.

In this smoothie:
  • 2 medium bananas
  • 1 small orange [I suggest using orange juice/orange juice concentrate instead]
  • 1 cup of Trader Joe's Strawberry Soy Yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons of Freeda Ultramino Protein Powder
  • 2 dropperfuls of Bioray Loving Energy Tonic
  • ~6 ice cubes
  • enough "milk" to make this 32 oz (about one cup?); I used Trader Joe's Original Almondmilk
Nutritional information: makes 2 servings; per one serving: 285 calories, 12g of protein, 55.5g of carbs, 11% of vitamin a, 95% of vitamin c, 34% of calcium & 12.5% of iron.

EOTD: A Smoky Mistake.

I started a smoky eye for work, then they called and said that they were issuing a snow day. So I busted out my indie brands and created this mashup for you. Sadly, I made a huge mistake when I added pink below the eye because now I feel like I look so tired. Whoops.

In this look:
  • Madd Style Cosmetix Optimus Primer Eyelid Primer
  • Darling Girl Cosmetics Eye Base in Starry Night
  • Glamour Doll Eye Loose Pigment in Obscura
  • Madd Style Cosmetix Loose Pigment in Revenge
  • Madd Style Cosmetix Loose Pigment in Adipose
  • Madd Style Cosmetix Loose Pigment in Girl With the Most Cake
  • Too Faced 3 Way Eye Liner
  • Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Liner in Perversion
  • Givenchy Phenom'Eyes Mascara in Noir

To the best of my knowledge, all of these items are vegan & cruelty free except for the mascara.  Also, don't judge my eyebrows.  They've been growing in for a while, but much like my natural hair color, it's still a total mess.  And yeah, I look exhausted in the inner corners of my eyes.. cause I am.  I work retail and it's the holidays, haha.  One night of sleep will sadly not get rid of that darkness.. it'll be gone soon though.

Mail Time: Vegan Conscious Box December 2012

This month's Conscious Box was curated by the Vegan Zombie, who I love watching every time he pops up in my news feed.

In this box:
  • Baby Ecos Laundry Detergent & Stain Remover
  • Kyi Sweet Almond Softening Oil
  • Parma! Vegan Parmesan
  • L'Ecuyer's Gourmet Dill Dip Mix
  • Just Pure Foods Sour Cream & Onion Zucchini Chips
  • Eye Walker Elements Cabin 108
  • Simply Hemp Milk
  • Achiva Native Energy in Mango
  • Shaman Shack Herbs 3 Immortals (with Reishi, Shilajit & Ormus)
  • Lush Nuts Dark Cocoa Chili Peanuts
  • ZenSociety Tea Tree Facial Cleanser
I have already eaten the Parma and the Lush Nuts.  Both are delicious.  I hardly remember parmesan cheese, so I will simply say I enjoyed this on my farfalle & meatless meatballs, haha.  The Lush Nuts pack a nice little surprise kick.  Not too hot, very, very well balanced with the bittersweet cocoa.

I'm rubbing the Softening Oil on my hands now, and I have to say I think it's working, but it does sting on my windburn a bit (though that could be touch related).  It smells like verbena and I think I like it.  I'm looking forward to trying it mixed with a bit of water as it suggests.

The Eye Walker Elements scent is not a very me scent.  I'm going to have to try it on a day off to report on the wear, OR make Clancy J wear it for me, haha.

FTC:  Our first Pawbox was sent for review.  This Holiday Pawbox was a total surprise to us; a huge thank you goes out to Pawbox!  These are our honest opinions.  Especially Megatron; dogs can't lie, silly.

Month of Thanks: The Great Catchup.

Day 8: I am thankful for lip balm. Without it, my life would literally be miserable. ♥

Day 9: it's after midnight, and at this exact moment, I am so terribly grateful for modern transportation.

Day ten: I am insanely grateful for all of the love and support I get in all of my endeavors. Even when people tell me things I don't want to hear, I'm grateful that they felt they need to reach out to me.

Keep in mind that this is, in fact, different than telling me how to live my life. I will never be grateful for anyone who thinks I'm not capable of making my own decisions and living my own life. "your lack of faith disturbs me."

Day 12: I am thankful for a safe (free) flight and a tattooed scumbag.

Day 13: I am thankful for protein, vegan protein!  & Ivy!! ♥

Day 14: I am thankful for coffee. Fresh pots!!!
ETA: It's PUMPKIN coffee! =D From Trader Joe's, for those of you who want some.

Day 15:
I am thankful for having a name tag when I work in seasonal retail... it's validating, ha.

Day 16:
I am thankful for red aprons and new co-workers.

Day 17:
I am thankful for people who believe in me enough to ask for favors to my face.

Day 18:
I am thankful for friends, photoshoots & art.

Day 19:
Yesterday, I was thankful for a level headed boyfriend & grippos.

Day 20:
Today, I am thankful for cookies and live in chefs.

Day 21:  I am thankful for long hours at work because that means I will have a good paycheck.  Can't complain about being able to make money.

Day 22:  I am thankful for the common bond among men - they love to try to one up each other.  I am especially grateful for a well mannered man who took it like a champ, haha.  I love you baby.

Day 23:  I am thankful for caffeine.  Red bull, soda, coffee, espresso, all of it.

Day 24:  I am thankful for co-workers who are worried about me and my stupid digestive disease.  Thanks for looking out for me ladies (and gentleman).

Day 25:  I am so very thankful for my first day off since Clancy arrived.

Mail Time! Conscious Box October 2012!

This arrived today. It's mostly edible, and when I would usually want more variety, I think I'm totally okay with it this month!  ETA:  I think this is the regular box from October, which was randomly sent to me, so thank you Conscious Box!  =D

Packing list:
  • RW Garcia's 3 Seed Curry & Mango Dippers
  • GoodLight Natural Candles in Unscented
  • Crum Creek Mills Soy Nut Mix
  • Teatulia Peppermint Tea
  • Bumble Bar in Original Peanut (hard to see in photo; sorry!)
  • Larabar Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Mini
  • Clandestino Banana Bar
  • Zarbee's All-Natural Children's Cough Syrup to Go
  • Yummy Earth Organic Sucker in Googly Grape
  • Vita Rocks in Lemon Burst
  • GeoDeo deodorant in Island

So. I can't say I'm excited about the GeoDeo. I already have one of these, and it smells like a damn wine cooler! I might save it and give it to someone. I have an open one if I really decide I want to try it. But I really can't get past the scent. I'm sure the other scents are awesome though.

I really can't wait to eat EVERYTHING in this box.  Huzzah, Conscious Box!!

A Month of Thanks, Week One.

I don't want to post these daily.  I feel like that'd clog up your feeds and make you thankful that I could get hit by a bus any day.  These are pulled straight off of my Facebook.
  • Day 1: First & foremost, I am thankful for my health and life, even with cold and sinus problems abound. It could certainly be worse and I am very aware of that.

  • Day 2: I am thankful for my jobs and my career. I am by no means well off, but I can pay my bills and feed myself.

  • Day 3: I am thankful for my true friends. There are a handful of people that I know, within reason, always have my back.

  • Day 4: I am thankful for Lisa Butters, who has proven time and again that all I need to say is "I need you" and she will be by my side, no questions asked. Girls like her are few and far between. ♥

  • Day 5: I am thankful for my dog. There were times that I wasn't sure he'd survive the life he's led. He is my baby and my life would be very different without him.

  • Day 6: I am thankful for my family. We constantly fight and I certainly do not see eye to eye with them on pretty much anything, but I know they care about me.

  • Day 7: I am thankful for new beginnings. I am leaping head first into a new chapter of my life and I am so grateful to know that I have these new opportunities in love and life before me.
The next few won't be so serious. Probably silly things like, "I am stupid thankful for tea. Tea rules." *sips her latte*

She is leaving me soon to live with her father, but I am thankful for my furry little lover, Ickis, too.

Phototutorial: Coffee Time.

I haven't done a tutorial in a while.  I've been busy between my two jobs, and whereas I miss you guys, I am really, really tired, haha.

I only used one brush!  This is the SOHO Smudge Brush from my Myglam/Ipsy Bag.  I used Madd Style Cosmetix pigments in Adipose, Xray Spex, Dirty Chai, Americano and Fresh Pots.  I used my Eyeko Skinny Liner in Black, my Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Pencil in Whiskey and MAC's eye kohl in Fascinating.  I also used my Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin, and Makeup Forever's Smoky Lash in Brown.

Mailtime: Influensters' Voxbox Natural 2012

My Influenster Voxbox finally showed up!!  Everyone got theirs a week ago, but mine finally showed up yesterday!  Yay!!  I'm just glad it showed up at all; I'd lost hope, mostly because of Influensters less than helpful response.  That said, I can't complain about customer service; I'm not a customer.

So let's go over what's inside.

GeoDeo deodorant - full size - $5.99
To me, this smelled like booze.  I have no idea why, but as soon as I smelled it, I thought it smelled like wine coolers.  j0hn thought it smelled delicious, so I decided he was going to have to be my test dummy.  I might try it on a day that I'm home, but due to a fear of smelling like booze, I can't do it.  j0hn has it on today and it's 8:43pm and he says he still doesn't smell bad.  We're going out to the club tonight, so that will be the true test.  Also in the box was a coupon code for a free gift with purchase.

Nectresse  Natural No Calorie Sweetener - 2 packets - $0.20 ($3.99 for 40 packets)I'm terrified to try this.  I found out recently that artificial sweeteners can trigger issues with IBD, so I'm not sure if I'm curious enough to try this.  I have to at some point, or I'll feel wasteful, but certainly not on a day where I work nine hours (like tomorrow).  Also included is a coupon for $1.00 off any one Nectresse product.

Lypsol Intense Protection LypMoisturizer - full size - $2.99
This one went to j0hn.  He was in need of a chapstick (while I am stocked on MSC lip bombs for a while).  He was immediately in love with the packaging because "look at the little bee on the side!  The slider is a little bee!"  He put it on and said it was tingly like a peppermint chapstick, and that he liked it.  I asked him if it was waxy and he said "not really."  All in all, not a chapstick for me, but j0hn seems to be enjoying it.  I tried it for myself, and it was soft and felt nice, and the smell was quite pleasant.

Eboost - 1 packet - $1.40 ($28 for 20 packets)
I can't wait to try this.  I'm tempted to give it to j0hn since he's been a little under the weather, but I want it!  Maybe we'll share it, though I already have him taking my vitamins and drinking Trader Joe's Green Plant Juice (what more can I do?!).  I didn't see anything immediately on the list that wasn't vegan, and the sight says no dairy, but I need to delve a little deeper into the vitamin sources listed on the packet.  I was out in the wind for a while waiting on the bus, so I think I need to drink this soon...

CleanWell Individual Hand Sanitizer Wipes - 1 wipe - $0.60 ($29.99 for 50)
As a makeup artist, I am always interested in any sort of sanitation device, haha.  It says that it's alcohol free, so not only are my dry hands interested, my brain is, too.  The active ingredient in this is Thymus Vulgaris Oil (Thymol 0.05%), which I had to google.  I found mixed studies about this substance, and as such, am not certain it's something I would want to rub on my hands ten to twenty plus times a day.  I'm going to try it once, as I don't think it's going to hurt me, but I won't be buying them for my kit as I thought I might.  These say "no animal testing" on the package, but I have more research to do.

Desert Essence Coconut Shine & Refine Lotion - 6.4 fl oz (full size) - $9.99
This product was chosen for me based on my demographic.  I have no idea why this product was chosen for me (other than me living in an urban area), but this is unfortunately not a product that is going to work in my hair.  I'll probably pass it on to my niece who is bi-racial and can use the product.  I have no idea if the term bi-racial is p.c. or not, so if you're offended, I'm sorry.  I have no idea what would be more correct.  I'll try it once, see how it goes, and probably pass it on to Sierra.  On the plus side, it does say that it's vegan right on the bottle.  I wish coconut oil worked with my hair because I love the way it smells, but sadly it doesn't.

The Original Dish Drying Mat - $4.99
I'm so excited to have this!!  I'm debating with myself if I want to save it for cleaning brushes or if I want to use it in the kitchen as it's intended.  Maybe I'll buy a second one.  I'm sure this bad boy will make an appearance in our next cooking video.. whenever that is.

TOTAL VALUE:  $26.16

Disclaimer:  This Voxbox was sent to me courtesy of Influenster.  This does not affect my opinion of the items received, and I reserve my right to my honest opinion.

Review & Giveaway: Manglaze Matte Nail Polish

This review has literally been a year in the making.  I have started typing it up several times, but felt like it needed more love than one I was giving it.  About a year ago, I contacted Manglaze, and they were very friendly and sent me a mini bottle of Mayonnaise to try out.  I love, love, love that nail polish, as it's the first matte white that hasn't been like white out on my nails.  So I've been stalking the site for a while, occasionally building a basket, but never committing.  Finally, I couldn't take it any longer, and it just so happened that they tipped me off on facebook that they were having a sale that weekend... I waited a few days and BAM!; more Manglaze was on it's way to me.  Well, to be fair, j0hn did pay for the order, so they're technically his.  So this post is sponsored by Manglaze, and my lovely boyfriend.

Myglam aka Ipsy September 2012!

I'm currently listening to my Baushaus channel on Pandora, editing photos for a future post here on Manglaze Nail Polish, but it just so happened that Myglam Bag just got here.  I mean, my Ipsy bag.. whut?

That's correct, it's plastered everywhere; Myglam is now Ipsy.  I don't really know, nor do I care what that really means, as it just seems like marketing to me.  I'm sure they're trying to shed that inconsistent image that has haunted them since the birth of the program.

So, on to the bag, that I just received on the 18th, too close to the end of the month for my liking.

See, the word ipsy is everywhere!

What's inside:
1.  Soho Smudge Brush - $5.97
2.  Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer 0.38 fl oz - $5.59
3.  Jane Sparkle Gloss in Sparkle Pink - $3.33
4.  Mirabella Eyeshadow in Semiformal - $10.00
5.  Circus Nail Polish in Tightrope - value still unknown
Total Value:  $24.89

First impressions:
I want to start off by pointing out that this is the second Walmart famous product I've gotten from a subscription service in a row (last month it was the Schick razor).  I am indifferent about this, as I sample most of my mid to high end products at work anyways, but it does make me sad for people who join this services for fancy stuff.  There is only ONE mid to high end product in this entire bag, and the sample isn't even a full oz [edit to add:  apparently a full size is 1.7 fl oz so I guess this is a good sample size...).  Also, this is a little nitpicket-y, and not MG/ipsy's fault, but Soho: this is NOT a smudge brush!  It's a crease or contour or even fluffy pencil brush.. but not a smudge brush.

Secondly, this is the SECOND MONTH IN A ROW they have sent us pink lipgloss.  I haven't touch the one from last month, and I'm not going to use this one either.  For starters, Jane isn't exactly my first choice for lipgloss, and neither is the color or texture of this one.. I'm not fourteen!

As for the other items, Mirabella is still a foreign brand to me and although I like that this is easy to put into a free palette, I really don't care for Mirabella as a brand so far.  And another nail polish from Andrea's Choice?  Cool, I guess.  I love nail polish, but it goes to show you that they're really inexpensive nail polishes if they've given away nearly the whole collection before you can even buy them.  Is this a tactic to guarantee that people will buy the two colors they haven't received yet in order to complete their collection?  I don't know, but I'm kind of over it.

And I almost forgot!  We got a coupon for JustFAB Shoes!  ...except that I have no idea what that is!  haha.

Final thoughts:
It's time to cancel Myglam.  I'm just not excited about it anymore, and my money is going to go elsewhere... namely Conscious Box!  And possibly even Vegan Cuts new subscription box!

Random Thoughts on Nutrition This Month.

1.  I'm not getting any younger.

I came to a realization today; I'm not getting any younger, seriously.  I have spent my teens and early twenties thinking, "Oh, I will worry about what I'm eating later," and "processed foods are terrible for me but I'm too young to worry about that."  Except today, while merchandising a zombie display at work, it just dawned on me: I'm twentyfive now.  That's half a decade from thirty.  My sisters are thirty.  Reflecting on my personal goals, and consequent achievements and failures, I am a little disappointed in myself.  I have constantly set long term goals (weight, financial status, etc), usually for Halloween, and I have constantly failed them.  This has made me realize that for many years, I have watched my goals come and go.  For years, I have been heavier than I've wanted to be.  For years I've eaten foods that I know are bad for me and felt poorly about it.  And for years I've said, "oh, next week.  Next month.  Next year..."

NOW.

2.  Leafy green salads are essentially delivery devices; make the most of them.

Who doesn't love a good salad now and again?  Even as a vegan, who constantly faces the stereotype of eating nothing but wedges of iceberg lettuce sprinkled in vinegratte and lemon juice, I still love them.  [That was an oddly specific example, but other vegans know why I said it like that; #veganproblems, haha.]  I realized today as I tossed my Trader Joe's Power to the Greens salad mix onto a plate, and poor dressing over it, that I was really sad that I didn't have any sunflower seeds, or cherry tomatoes, or.. ANYTHING else.  What a waste of a perfectly good opportunity to pack more health into an otherwise bland (in taste and nutrition) salad.

Don't know what Power to the Greens is?  Check it out on Hint of Greens' blog post!

3.  Food logs are for the observant, NOT the obsessive!

I have had food logs throughout my life.  I have done them for calorie counting, for food allergies, for attempting to decode my supposed IBS, and now I am happy to say that I do NOT feel obsessive for it.  Being aware of what you eat is a good thing.  It keeps you in touch with your food, which should help you be a healthier, happier person (even if it just makes you happy to know that you still have x amount of cookies at home because you've only eaten seven of them).  I have had to primarily keep food logs becaue of my digestive issues, and I feel like they're important to cracking the code.  I have also kept them to share what vegans eat with others.  My food blog is here.

Birchbox September 2012: Underwhelmed.

This is the second Birchbox that left me going, "...eh."

This looks like SO MUCH STUFF, right?  It's an illusion!

This is what's really in this box.  I'm excited about two things in this box, indifferent about two, and disappointed in two.  Can you guess which are which?!

1.  Nexxus Pro-Mend Hair Care Samples - $0.25 + $0.37 + $0.21 = $0.83
2.  Benefit Skin Care Samples - $0.47 + $0.49 = $0.96
3.  Color Club Nail Polish in Status Uptade (Update?) 0.25fl oz- $4.00
4.  Twistband - $1.83
5.  Mighty Leaf Tea in Vanilla Bean, Chamomile Citrus and Green Tea Tropical - $1.99
6.  Youngblood Mineral Primer 5ml/0.17floz- $6.97

Total Value: $16.58

There is also a coupon for Madewell ($25.00 off of a $75.00 purchase).  The Lookbook in the box is a collaboration with Madewell.  It's cute, but parts of it kind of miss the fall trends.  This fall is calling for an interesting blend of shades, sages, crimsons, plums; and beige is a timeless color for balancing out so many deep, smoky possibilities.

I'm really, really excited to try the primer from Youngblood.  I've heard the name Youngblood here and there, and my interest has grown in them the more I hear.  The fact that they're so passionate about cruelty free makes me very happy (and curious).  I'm always excited about tea, so these Mighty Leaf samples are no exception.  I've been curious about the whole Twistband craze, so I'm excited to get one to try out.  I'm always happy to receive nail polish, and whereas I hate tiny bottles, I do like the color I received.  The samples leave me underwhelmed and I'm sure I'll pass them on.

I think this is the end of the line for Birchbox and I.  It's been fun, and I've had some good boxes, but overall I'm unimpressed.

FOTD: Inspired by Lady Gaga's FAME fragrance!

Today at Sephora we all dressed up with Lady Gaga inspired looks.  I pulled various pieces of looks I like dating all the way back to the Fame days (2008), mostly because I'm a hopeless fangirl, but also because that is the name of the fragrance.

Jillian (my lovely co-worker) chose a more subdued Gaga look, whereas I went for gold leaf, black "scales", black lips and as close to riglets as I could get in my hair in about five minutes flat.

Here is a better look of the detailing, though my hair & lips were not finished.  I used a lot of eyeshadow in this look, including Urban Decay's Blunt and Half Baked, as well as Wet N Wild's matte black.  It looked a LOT more dramatic in person, but unfortunately photos aren't doing it justice.  =[

Also, how do I like the Lady Gaga fragrance?  It smells TERRIBLE on me, but fantastic on pretty much everyone else (which is totally normal).  It's almost like a more sophisticated Justin Bieber fragrance, but in the best possible way.

How to Make a (Vegan) Pumpkin Latte at Home!

Now, I don't like my lattes super hot (and actually usually ice them), but this is a good recipe for a windy evening (or.. when it's 90 degrees out, like right now).  It's super easy and you don't even need a stove, though how you choose to boil your water is up to you; if you only have a hotplate instead of a microwave, of course boil your water that way.  I have an electric kettle, and would usually use that, but I don't know where the heating base is right now.  If you enjoy tea (or instant coffee, or even ramen noodles or miso), I highly recommend an electric kettle.

Also, this is a great way to reuse a glass bottle and have a portable latte like what you'd buy at the gas station or grocery from a certain big chain.  =]  My bottle used to be a Taste of Nirvana Coconut Water.  These bottles are the perfect size for this, and coconut water is so good for you.

You need:
1/2 cup water (estimated)
1/2 cup vanilla soymilk (I use light vanilla, which I steal from j0hn; again, estimated)
1-2 teaspoons turbinado sugar (or sweetener of your choice & how sweet you like it)
1 bag of Bigelow Pumpkin Spice Autumn Spiced Tea (use two if you really like it concentrated)

In my case, I fill my glass bottle more than 1/3 of the way full, but slightly less than 1/2 of the way full (if that makes any sense at all?  See the photo) and pop it in the microwave for a minute and a half.  You may need to adjust this according to your microwave, mine is pretty weak.  My water is just boiling when I remove it from the microwave (with a hot pad, it will be hot!).

Steep your tea bag for 2-4 minutes.  Squeeze all of the liquid out of your tea bag (read: pure flavor) and toss it.  Add your sugar/sweetener first, because it tends to dissolve better in warm liquid.  Then add your soymilk to the top.  Cap it, shake it, and enjoy it!

Alternatively: leave some room at the top & add some ice if you like it cold.  If you like it hot, steam or boil your milk beforehand, but be careful; you need to make it in a mug instead, or you WILL burn your hands!  Glass bottles are great heat conductors, haha.

TAG: The Liebster Award!

Rules:
1.  Post 11 facts about yourself.
2.  Answer the questions the tagger has set for you.
3.  Create 11 questions for the people you've tagged to answer.
4.  Tag 11 people.

11 Facts About Me

1.  I have been vegan for like seven years and straight edge for nearly four years.  Vegans don't eat anything that has anything to do with the animal kingdom.  Including fish.  Ha.
2.  I have post traumatic stress disorder, which causes me to have reoccuring dreams (for as long as I can remember), inappropriate emotional responses, poor attention span, and really random flashbacks.  I also have related insomnia periods and... mood swings, hah.
3.  John and I are child free, but we do share our home with a dog and two cats.  The dog is my baby, the eldest cat his baby, and the youngest our baby; I am in general more of a dog person.
4.  I have been heavier and I have been thinner.  I was much happier at my low weight, both with my appearence and my health.
5.  j0hn says, "you make good foods."
6.  John and I have our home decorated for Halloween year round.  We are really into skeletons and anatomy.  Oh, and pumpkins.  We love pumpkin ANYTHING.
7.  Although I love the freedom of being a freelance artist, I truly love working at Sephora.  I love being able to impact a maximum number of lives because I truly believe (good) makeup can be life changing.
8.  I went to a tech school for communications and broadcasting, then went on to college courses for Electronic Media.  I had to drop out my junior year.  I would go back for Journalism on the magazine track.  I never thought my life would bring me to a career in cosmetics.  I have Lady Gaga and emilynoel83 to blame for that, ha.
9.  My favorite movies range from anything from childhood classics to disgustingly gory horror films.  I tend to avoid a lot of dramas and comedies, but do enjoy an action film now and again.  Also, I tend to prefer films from overseas, and often find my favorite films are remakes of foreign films.
10.  I drink a lot of coffee.  I am on a friendly, first name basis with most of the baristas at the Starbucks in my mall.  They know where I live, where I work, and one may even be my neighbor soon.  It's probably not healthy, but I do look forward to seeing them so it keeps me coming back.
11.  I don't read as much as I used to.  I honestly feeling like I'm losing my intelligence as I age, and it terrifies me.  There are days that I can't even string together words with more than one syllable and I wonder what happened to the sharp young lady that learned SAT vocabulary for fun.

11 questions from Toxid.lotus
1.  My favorite color is apparently green.  It took me a really long time to come to this conclusion, though just easily it could be said my favorite color is black.  My decor is mostly black, my clothes are mostly black, and I love a good black eyeshadow.  But right after that is green.
2.  I have a lot of deep memories.  Most of them were not positive.  I remember being three or four years old, living in a really poor section 8 apartment, and getting in trouble for spraying all of the exterior windows on a "block" with green puffy paint.  I remember having it all over my hands and my favorite Mickey Mouse Safari shirt.  Maybe it wasn't puffy paint, just fabric paint.  I remember being scared because I was in trouble, but mostly being upset that my shirt was ruined.
3.  I have a ton of tattoos.  I really, really, really want to finish my right arm, and get my left sleeve done.  My left arm is going to be all black and grey, and have one panel images from some of my favorite comics.  I need to finish the Year One Batman tattoo, and start my Death of Superman piece.
4.  I love green tea and chai tea.  I love them even more with disgusting amounts of sugar.
5.  I love early fall.  Even though Halloween is a little later, I love the weather in early fall.  The leaves are starting to change, it's cooler, but not cold, and I am not considered as weird as I am the other nine months of the year.  Clearly I'm just really enthusiastic about Halloween!  No one dresses or decorates like that year round, right?!
6.  One?  Indie:  MSC despite the lack of foundation.  "Mainstream":  Urban Decay.
7.  Nothing more than toes and maybe some bones in my left foot.
8.  I love pretty much any scent I have from One Hand Washes the Other.  I also really love Lavanilla's Pure Vanilla fragrance.  I am in love with the new Guerlain Le Petite Robe Noire, Tocca's Violette, and Burberry Brit Sheer.
9.  See above
10.  I have an irrational fear of zombies.  I am terrified of not knowing what the government is doing with bioweapons, and am afraid that something could actually create zombies because of it.  Not necessarily brain eating zombies, because those aren't as scary, but flesh eating, angry, running zombies terrify me to no end.  I think it's because I'm happy with my life and don't want to see something like that happen.
11.  I actually haven't given a lot of thought to what I'll be for Halloween.  No clue.  I'll probably be working and not too worried about it.  I love Halloween year round, so on actual Halloween night, I tend to just wing it.

11 questions from me:
1.  What is your one must have holy grail cosmetic?
2.  Who has been the most influentual person in your life?
3.  Do you have any pets?  What are they?  (Stole this one)
4.  If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
5.  Do you play video games?  What's your favorite?
6.  What would your "last meal" be?
7.  What is the best book you have ever read?  Why?
8.  What is the coolest animal ever?  Why?
9.  What is your all time favorite scent?
10.  What's your "style"?  Home decor, clothing, etc.
11.  Tell us one random memory that you want to share.

I tag:
Everyone!  =D

My Top Five Vegan Foundations!

Looking for an updated version of this list?  Check this post here!

Not pictured:  Hourglass Immaculate Foundation

I have combination to oily skin, so please keep that in mind when reading this. However, I combat this fact by using a great primer (usually Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer) to make my skin appear a little more normal. I fully believe that all of these foundations can be worn by all skin types.

1. Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15 – 1.7 oz - $38.00

This is definitely my current favorite foundation. It is NOT full coverage immediately, but you can very easily build it up to be. I have been wearing this as both my foundation and concealer. It has fantastic coverage, even when applied lightly, and offers good oil control. I haven’t had any issues with patchiness, and although I wouldn’t say it lasts 12 hours on me, I definitely get a minimum of eight hours. They want you to use their big bamboo brush with this foundation, and while I agree that a large, dense synthetic brush is necessary, I strongly dislike the size of the brush head. I use a Real Techniques buffing brush, the Sephora Mineral Powder Brush #45, the Sephora Pro Airbrush #55 or #56, or the Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush if you get my second favorite foundation.

2. Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation – 1 oz - $38.00

This foundation is everything you want out of a lightweight foundation. It offers color coverage without adding any texture (which is both good and bad, depending on your needs). It feels amazing because it feels like you’re wearing nothing at all, yet for those with no texture issues, you will be left with flawless skin. I am a huge fan of the finish of this foundation, and really love it. This is a fantastic foundation for anyone who likes how lightweight a tinted moisturizer is, but want more coverage. This foundation nearly won out the spot for number one, but I am in a long term relationship with my Amazonian Clay foundation at this point. They want you to apply it with their smaller, dense, synthetic fiber brush, and re-designed their pre-exisiting Good Karma foundation brush to make it perform even better with the formula. Important notes: it’s very liquid-y, and you have to shake the bottle before each application.

3. Beauty Without Cruelty Ultimate Natural Liquid Makeup-up – 0.5 oz - $23.95

I hadn’t realized that this was only a half an ounce, and that’s mainly because this bottle has lasted me so long (and still isn’t finished). It’s a beautiful, naturally radiant formula that looks like your skin, only better. I would compare the finish to NARS Sheer Glow, so if you prefer a more matte look, or are more on the oily side, you’ll need a good primer and setting powder. It applies easily, and it’s also wonderful with a fluffy, dense, synthetic brush (though I’ve also used a beauty blender type sponge and a flat foundation brush with no issue). It’s a great foundation since it’s so natural looking, I can’t imagine anyone truly disliking the finish. I will warn that the shades run possibly a tad dark, so keep that in mind when you order. I wear fair, and it’s still possibly a little too dark for me.

4. Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation – 1 oz - $55.00

Where to begin: I love this foundation. If price were no factor in how I graded things, this foundation would certainly be in the top three. However, it is a little pricy and it kills me just a little every time I walk by it at work (because I’ll never bring it home with me). The price, however, is due from it’s promises (not claims!) that you do NOT need a powder with it, it WILL control oil, and it WILL have and maintain a matte finish all day. That is a pretty big list of demands, but this foundation delivers. I pair it with the Mineral Veil Primer and a stippling or buffing brush, and couldn’t be happier. The coverage is great and the range of colors is excellent (except for deep to very deep skin tones).

5. Pumpkin and Poppy Full Coverage Mineral Foundation – 30 grams - $10.75 (on sale)

I am not a huge fan of mineral powders of any sort, but I do make an exception when it comes to Pumpkin and Poppy. The owner is a long time internet friend, and I know that a lot of time and love goes into every product she creates. She worked very hard to bring out a full coverage mineral powder foundation that also has a large range of shades. She is currently reformulating all of her foundations, so look for those to return later this year. Another awesome thing about Pumpkin & Poppy? In the past, you could order a "refill" for your empty foundation, which helps reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills! I think she will be bringing this program back. She also offered custom mixed colors (ie: if you find that mixing two parts of one foundation to one part of another was your perfect shade, she'd send you that, instead of having to buy both).

MAIL: Birchbox August 2012!

Please excuse the sunshine photo, haha.

In this box:
-Shu Uemura Full Shimmer Shampoo Sample 0.5 fl oz - $2.40
-Shu Uemura Full Shimmer Treatment Sample 0.5 fl oz -$5.67
-Viva La Juicy La Fleur Sample 0.05 fl oz - $1.40
-Jouer Birchbox Pink Lip Gloss 0.06 fl oz - $5.00
-Apothederm Stretch Mark Cream 0.7 fl oz - $11.04
-Schick Hydro Silk Razor - $8.95

Total value:  $34.46

First impressions:
I'm excited to try the Shu Uemura, and totally confused as to how there is now a US branch.  Does this mean that the beloved eyelash curler could make a return?  Or did they sell the technology to Lancome because they never plan on coming back with makeup?  The Viva La Juicy smells nice in the bottle, but of course, it gets a little weird on me.  I'll wait and ask j0hn what he thinks of it when he gets home.  The lip gloss is nice, but it's so freaking tiny!  Apparently though, it's a quarter of the product in a full size, so that makes me a little sad to put into perspective.  The Apothederm product excites and disappoints me in the same breath.  I doubt there is enough here to see a reduction in stretch marks.. especially since the bottle is only half full.  And lastly, this month's lifestyle extra came to everyone.  The razor is exciting because it even comes with coupons on the back.  I'm probably going to pass this one to my sister though, as I already have a razor I like, as does j0hn, or we use electric razors.  Maybe I'll save it for my next trip, though.

Final thought?  This box was better than I was expecting; we had no spoilers available this month and it made it a little hard to get excited about it, but it also kept my expectations low.  It's a toss up on that one.  Want to try Birchbox yourself?

This was in the box as well, and provides tips and tricks for makeup, tools, reading labels, shaving and skincare.

MAIL: MyGlam August 2012!

What's in this month's bag?
-Circus Nail Polish in Spectacle - full size: price unknown [V, CF]
-Demeter Roll on Perfume Oil in Clean Skin - .29 fl oz: $10.00 [says CF on their site]
-Eclos Moisture Therapy Regenerative Cream - .25 fl oz:  $3.12
-Eclos Cellular Activator Facial Serum - .5 fl oz:  $7.50
-s.a.l.t.y. cosmetics Glama-ZOID! Eye Shadow - 1 gm: $5.98
Total:  $26.60

First impressions:
Holy cow that eyeshadow is overpriced!  A 2.5 gram loose pigment is $14.97?!  WHAT?  My second impression was.. I like the nail polish, I actually like the roll on oil, but... whut?  The gloss smells like.. candy, but maybe not in a good way, and they're presenting it as an extra goodie, not a regular part of the bag.  This month isn't good or bad, it's just.. confusing.  I'm kind of indifferent about this month's bag.  I guess if I didn't know how damn overpriced the eyeshadow was, I wouldn't feel so eh about it, but, $14.97?!  C'mon!!  What kind of start up charges that much for "mica, boron nitride 30" mixed together in a pot?!  It's white, sparkly and sheer!  That's like.. a 600% markup, at least!  I'm so confused by this bag.  And can I just say, seeing "STEM CELLS" plastered all over the skin care has me scratching my head.  It's a serious anti-aging ingredient, and Myglam is geared towards 13 to 30 year olds.. not 40 to 60 year olds?

I like the bag a lot at least?  I.. still don't know.  Eh.

Color Vegan List for Sephora Kenwood #258!

Hey guys, this list only applies to my store in the sense that other stores may have more cruelty free brands.  My store carries several other non-CF brands, so I didn't bother to research their vegan-friendly products because they're not really vegan-friendly!  The other non-CF color brands at my store are Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, NARS, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Laura Mercier, Givenchy (inconclusive on their CF status), Guerlain, Lancome, Clinique, Benefit, Buxom, Bare Escentuals and.. anyone else I forgot.  I did not research products that are in Beauty To Go because most of those are brands that are in the store and are mini-sizes of their full size products.  I am still researching skin care and currently have an incomplete list.  I also need to research our nail polish lines and our hair care.  I have started both, so if you need any suggestions now, please feel free to comment below.

DISCLAIMER:  This list was researched by me, Elizabeth A Durham, and does NOT represent the opinion or act as any sort of statement on behalf of Sephora, LLC, LVHM, or any of it's subsidiaries.  I researched this list based off of emails from companies, public vegan lists, or other trusted resources.  This list is accurate to the best of knowledge as of the date of it's post.  Any changes made to formulas of finished products is simply out of my control and as things change, I will try to keep up with editing this list.  This list was compiled for my personal use, and to share with my clients.  If you see any errors or have any questions about this list, please comment below.
